First Impressions: Intro to Letterpress

About this event

Discover letterpress printing in this hands-on introduction to wood type and how to print with it. Students will explore the history, tools, and techniques of letterpress while learning the basics of operating a vintage Vandercook SP-15 printing press.

Each participant will learn to set a word by hand using a selection of Onward's wood type and then print a mini broadside of it. Together, we'll then arrange and print everyone's words as a collaborative type specimen sheet, inspired by historic type sample books.

You'll leave the studio with new knowledge and two custom impressions: a print of your own word and a copy of the group's collective type sheet.

No experience is necessary. Class size is kept small to ensure everyone has an opportunity to work directly with the type and press.
