- ➤ A Cornell study shows that when inventors move to a county, local startups grow in number and success, producing more venture backed companies and unicorns. The research tracked patent records and startup data through 2016 and found that every 12 to 15 inventors lead to one venture backed startup. Cornell Chronicle
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Community Arts Partnership received $317,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts to boost local art & support local artists. The funds will cover CAP’s operations and grant programs in Tompkins County. 607 News Now
- ➤ Winter Village Music Camp brought about 150 campers and 30 faculty together from Jan. 8 to Jan. 11 for workshops, jam sessions, and concerts in local venues including Bike Bar (free concerts) and CSMA. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cynthia Leifer was named director of Cornell's Office of Postdoctoral Affairs effective Jan. 15, with the office moving under Research & Innovation to better support 750 postdoctoral researchers at the university's Ithaca campuses. She is tasked with expanding programs and resources following Christine Holmes' 34-year tenure. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ School district leaders announced Tuesday that Cornell University will increase its yearly financial support from $650,000 to $700,000 this fiscal year, with further raises planned through 2031 to bolster K-12 education. Officials say the move comes amid ongoing budget planning. The Ithaca Voice
- ➤ Cornell received a $1.5 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support 10 postdoctoral appointments in key natural science fields across four colleges (including Arts and Sciences, CALS, Veterinary Medicine, and Engineering). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center voted 82% to unionize on Thursday, Jan. 15, and will begin bargaining with management to address workplace issues for better staffing and wages — following a long campaign for improved conditions. Ithaca.com
