  • Residents needing free income tax help can book an appointment at Tompkins County Public Library or join Zoom sessions with volunteers from Cornell University and Ithaca College starting today until April 15 — in-person help is for U.S. citizens under $69,000 and online coaching for those up to $89,000.  The Ithaca Voice

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ithaca College alum Elaine Martone won her seventh Grammy Award on Sunday for her work with the Cleveland Orchestra — marking the first win of Classical Producer of the Year for three consecutive years. The Rochester native set a historic milestone for an Ithaca College graduate.  607 News Now

  • Oven Fresh Jobs will host a job fair on Wednesday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shops at Ithaca Mall, giving local job seekers the chance to connect with employers in government+ hospitality, healthcare, education and more with free entry and prizes for attendees.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell’s student-run chip design team C2S2 uses open-source tools to design and test chips while partnering with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on a bird call classifier. The project gives undergraduates semiconductor experience (a task usually for advanced professionals) at Cornell.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Historian Keisha N. Blain will speak on Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m. in Statler Hall, Room 196 at Cornell’s Center for Racial Justice and Equitable Futures as part of the Black History Month series.   • Multidisciplinary artist Tricia Hersey will speak on 'Rest Is Resistance' at Sage Chapel on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. The annual MLK Commemorative Lecture is part of a Health Promoting Campus initiative and includes rest sessions on Feb. 10 and 11 (registration is required for in-person attendance).  Cornell Chronicle
  • Seven Cornell faculty were honored with the university’s highest teaching awards for undergraduate and graduate instruction, recognizing exceptional mentorship and innovative classroom methods in Ithaca.   • The Great Backyard Bird Count, hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, runs Feb. 13-16 and is set to attract nearly one million global participants. Ithaca birders can join the Cayuga Bird Club event at Stewart Park on Feb. 14 + share in this local effort to count birds.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Ithaca officials are updating the energy plan by splitting a community-wide energy purchase program from a new system that lets residents invest in local renewables under the Green New Deal — a move to lower carbon emissions — and council will vote on the DER plan Feb. 4.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Ithaca High School girls hockey is thriving this season after a one-year hiatus, with the team fielding 24 players - the largest squad since 2019-20.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Cornell's men's basketball lost to Penn 81-91 Saturday at Newman Arena after a brief second-half rally. The team will face Columbia next Saturday at 2 p.m. in New York City with livestream coverage on ESPN+.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cornell men’s basketball defeated Princeton 87-64 Friday night at Newman Arena with strong defense and efficient scoring to secure their third straight Ivy League win — the Red will face Columbia Saturday at 2 p.m. in New York City to extend their momentum.  The Cornell Daily Sun
