CULTURE NEWS

  • Doug Levine left his post as executive director of the downtown State Theatre on Feb. 26 after 17 years of service, and the board said they will announce a new director in the coming weeks (recognizing his contributions).  607 News Now
  • Ithaca College Hillel’s Interfaith Dinner Series brings students together on Wednesday nights in Muller Chapel for interfaith dialogue and cultural meals. The dinners, which began in November 2025, will feature Hinduism on April 29 – attracting about 25 attendees while funded by a $3,000 grant.  The Ithacan
  • Members from Mimi Collage Club held creative workshops+activities for Ithaca College students on March 4, sharing techniques that encourage collage making and self-expression.  The Ithacan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ph.D. candidate Russell Burgett filed an appeal to the NLRB on Feb. 10 to challenge a 2016 ruling that granted graduate student unions official status at Cornell - if approved, it will remove union bargaining rights for nearly 9,000 students.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cornell’s Spacecraft Planetary Image Facility (SPIF) will celebrate its 46th anniversary on March 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Space Sciences Building, featuring door prizes, community activities, and outreach that has reached over 41,000 people across the state.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Jeanelle Wu, a sophomore transfer at Cornell (in Ithaca), joined the all-female a cappella group The Callbaxx to build confidence and form a supportive community on campus. Weekly rehearsals and semester concerts give her a safe space to pursue her passion for singing.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Ithaca College's Academic Support Center is expanding its ADHD programming this Spring by adding weekly body doubling study sessions on Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. in the Taughannock Falls Room at the Campus Center.   • A Cornell SC Johnson College of Business study finds that value stocks follow predictable cycles, with five- to seven-year periods of outperformance following growth phases. The research published Feb. 4 introduces a metric — the implied value premium — that forecasted market swings better than traditional tools.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early Wednesday, the city ordered all 181 units at Asteri to be vacated after inspectors found unsafe stairwells and residents were warned to stay at their own risk + officials worked with Vecino Group and local partners to arrange temporary housing. The measures came after repeated safety complaints since the building opened.  The Ithaca Voice

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases rebounded last week while COVID numbers dropped slightly and coughing increased in the area, according to local health data and the Sleep Cycle app (which tracks cough trends during sleep).  14850
  • A Cornell study published on Feb. 23 found that exposure to diverse microbes worsens allergy-related airway inflammation in adult mice versus newborn mice, leading researchers to plan further tests to examine how timing and microbial classes impact allergic responses.  Cornell Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local businessman John Guttridge bought the historic Fury Block at 126-130 S. Cayuga St. for $540,000 on Feb. 24 and plans to restore the building carefully + he said an architectural assessment will guide repairs over the coming years as he works on other projects.  The Ithaca Voice
