COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ithaca Farmers Market is now held indoors at Triphammer Marketplace on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until March 28 so locals can buy fresh produce and artisanal goods (tourists may also explore nearby shops).  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Residents began moving back into Asteri Ithaca after the Order to Vacate was lifted on March 20 at 2:30 p.m. The Vecino Group coordinated a phased return with hotel transportation and on-site support while inspections and meal assistance continued.  607 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell Fashion Collective is hosting its 42nd Spring Runway Show today at Barton Hall with nearly 3,000 guests expected — the event will present student-led collections themed from grayscale to technology.  The Cornell Daily Sun

  • Cornell sophomore Jared Miller revives his freshman era approach by attending a student concert alone to meet new friends on campus. His social experiment shows that stepping outside familiar groups can renew campus connections.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • At Cornell University on March 18, mechanical engineering doctoral candidate Ellen van Wijngaarden won the 11th Three Minute Thesis competition with her talk 'Cracking Down on Cracks: A Living Coating for Crack Detection,' earning $1,500 among nine finalists.  Cornell Chronicle
  • CAROW at the ILR School awarded three seed grants to support research on how artificial intelligence affects work, including job ad responses to generative AI, worker voice in AI governance, and creative collaboration with AI. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Associate professor Vipan Kumar at the School of Integrative Plant Science is researching glyphosate-resistant weeds that have challenged New York farmers since reports began in 2014. His study covers cases in Seneca, Livingston, Genesee and Ontario Counties and aims to develop new strategies for managing hardier weeds.  Cornell Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 100 students from Cornell and 17 other universities competed in an AI health hackathon in New York City from March 6-8, building prototypes including SpineSight XR for scoliosis screening and earning prizes for innovative health care solutions.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Researchers at Cornell are testing an AI tool that uses ultrasound images to predict advanced heart failure risk. The study, published on March 3 and showing 85% accuracy, may soon lead to routine exams that better identify patients—improving care for many.  Cornell Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ithaca natives John Whalen and Doug Fernandez, half brothers, spent the past year buying over a dozen West End properties, including the old train station at 806-810 West Buffalo Street, to renovate them for hospitality and tourism.
