COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents of Hillside Acres mobile home park in Varna are meeting today at the Community Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to vote on a plan to raise over $10.75M to buy the community after the state withdrew its funding support.  The Ithaca Voice

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cornell Fashion Collective Spring Runway Show in Barton Hall paid tribute to childhood stories and cultural heritage on March 21, featuring 42 student collections, including nine full collections by seniors.   • Starting tonight, Cinemapolis, Cornell Cinema and Regal Ithaca Mall show new releases and special screenings—Cinemapolis will host the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival this weekend and a new Movie Club on Friday while Cornell Cinema will close for spring recess on Saturday.  14850

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in New York rose to an average of $3.79 per gallon on Monday, up from $3.53 a week earlier—traders pointed to increased spring demand and Middle East tensions. Analysts expect prices to climb another 20 to 30 cents in the coming weeks.  Ithaca Journal

  • Cornell Votes is a nonpartisan group working to boost voter registration and engagement ahead of the 2026 midterms—aiming for 90% registration and 44% turnout; it meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. in Kennedy Hall 209 and provides text alerts for election reminders.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Bruce Clemens ’72, one of the founders of Aqua del Pueblo, appears on the March Startup Cornell podcast to explain how his 1972 trip to Guatemala led to more than 500 water & sanitation projects that have touched 500,000 lives.   • A Cornell study found that teens with a steadier sense of purpose during a 70-day challenge report higher well-being and self-esteem when meeting with adult champions.   • Students and locals gathered Sunday evening at Personal Best Brewery for Physics on Tap, where Prof. Natasha Holmes explained how uncertainty in experiments encourages critical thinking in labs; the Cornell Society of Physics Students plans more sessions to bring research closer to the community (a nod to hands-on learning).  The Cornell Daily Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coordinated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Great Backyard Bird Count set a global record in February with over 1.1 million participants and nearly half a million checklists covering 8,257 bird species; the data now support research on migratory patterns.  The Cornell Daily Sun

  • Senator Webb honored Phoebe Brown on March 18 in Albany during the Legislative Women’s Caucus Women’s History Month celebration. Brown, a former alderwoman and community leader known for decades of service, was recognized for her work uplifting marginalized groups & strengthening local institutions.  Ithaca.com
  • 3rd Street near Aldi at 505 3rd Street will close for stormwater drainage work as crews install a catch basin, pipe + curb from Wednesday, March 25 through Wednesday, April 1. Emergency vehicles and local residents will have access to driveways while sidewalks remain unaffected.  14850
  • County legislators allocated $50,000 from contingency funds on March 19 to help Asteri residents evacuated on March 4 due to fire hazards secure legal advice; the funds are available for tenants, including those in transitional housing, to learn their legal rights.  The Ithaca Voice
