COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ithaca’s NO KINGS Parade for Human Rights will start at 1 p.m. today from Ithaca Commons and follow a new route via Cayuga and South Titus to finish at South Meadow Street for a honk+wave event that features drummers, singers, and local discounts.  Tompkins Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell students saw renowned pianist Sir Stephen Hough perform at Bailey Hall as part of the Dallas Morse Coors Concert Series (formerly the Cornell Concert Series) on a rainy Friday in March. The event united students and community members, and future concerts like Flamenco Vivo will offer more affordable cultural experiences.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cinemapolis is hosting the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) in downtown Ithaca from March 27 to April 12. The event shows global films with filmmaker Q&As and live events.  14850
  • This Friday afternoon, Cornell will host Dragon Day where architecture students parade a unique dragon on campus. Road delays will occur from 1 to 3 p.m. along Rand Hall & the Arts Quad as the parade moves through campus.  14850

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lexie Loveless, a recent graduate from Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, received the Norman R. McConney, Jr. Award for Student Excellence earlier this month, making her the second TC3 student to earn the honor since 1967.  607 News Now
  • Nobel Laureate John M. Martinis will share his quantum mechanics research from 5–6 p.m. on April 8 in Rhodes-Rawlings Auditorium — Room KG70 in Klarman Hall at Cornell. The professor emeritus is known for his key work in advancing quantum information science.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Ithaca Department of Public Works is launching its annual spring street cleaning on Monday, March 30 as crews clear debris to reduce flooding risk + residents must move vehicles when ‘No Parking’ signs appear 24 hours ahead to prevent fines.  14850
  • Flags were flown at half-staff Friday in New York to honor Major Sorffly Davius, a National Guard officer and NYPD member who died on March 6 at Camp Buehring in Kuwait after a medical episode while deployed. Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered the gesture, and local governments followed the directive.  14850

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell experts warn that ticks remain active as warmer weather returns and can be found in suburban parks, wooded areas, and backyards; residents should check themselves after outdoor activities, use full clothing + repellent, and know the proper way to remove ticks.  WENY
  • Helen Newman Fitness Center is the favorite gym for North Campus students who want a friendly place to work out and enjoy a view of Beebee Lake. The gym is near North Star dining hall and many students start their workout at 5:30 p.m. daily.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Flu and cough cases increased in the Ithaca area this week while COVID counts dropped across local counties. Health data from Tompkins County shows new cases fell from 25 to 14 per 100,000 (Schuyler's case count reached zero).  14850

  • After being forced out on March 4 for safety issues, about 200 Asteri residents began returning on March 20 despite facing hazardous conditions, controversial cash-for-keys offers, and tighter security measures that may limit access; city officials and owners are under scrutiny for ongoing building management problems + risk.  The Cornell Daily Sun

  • The Cornell men’s hockey team saw its season end Friday in a five nil loss at Blue FCU Arena as Denver’s experienced players dominated early & set the pace for the game. Coach Casey Jones said the team struggled to overcome early deficits & could not match the Pioneers’ efficiency.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cornell baseball turned the tide with a 6-3 win over Princeton on Sunday after freshman Jake Hower’s eighth-inning home run tied the game, and a two-run homer extended the lead; the team prepares for its home opener against Harvard today at 11:30 a.m. (game at home).  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cornell’s men’s lacrosse team faces Yale today at Schoellkopf Field at 3:30 p.m. Coach Buczek said the team will focus on aggressive offense — aiming to boost their Ivy League tournament hopes despite key injuries.  The Cornell Daily Sun
