COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new guidebook titled Best 50 Hikes in and around Ithaca NY, written by retired biologist Myra Shulman, will be released in April and highlights 50 trails within a 30-minute drive of downtown Ithaca (with maps and safety tips for all ability levels).   • Renowned expert James Garbarino, professor emeritus of human development, died in Ithaca on March 7 at age 78; a memorial service will be held Apr. 11 at 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca (306 North Aurora Street).  Cornell Chronicle

  • Ithaca College students are transforming the local music scene with creative memorabilia; junior Avery Larson designs unique setlists for his band and sophomore Matt Argus publishes a monthly zine that highlights community talents (photographer CJ Owen is working on a documentary to capture the vibrant scene).  The Ithacan
  • Cornell’s Ukrainian Program is hosting a display of colorful Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) made by staff member Lori Radcliff-Woods at Goldwin Smith Hall until the end of the semester, offering students a way to experience Ukrainian art and history.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ithaca College Television and Voice of Ithaca College Radio joined forces on March 24 to record In The Stu at an on-campus studio in Roy H. Park Hall. The monthly segment, inspired by Tiny Desk Concert, featured local musicians and plans a mid-April follow-up taping.  The Ithacan
  • Ithaca College alum Farida Abdul-Wahab presented on a panel at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York City on March 10. She explained how storytelling can reshape global representation and shared lessons from launching her production company (STUDIO 218).  The Ithacan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Big Red, the red-tailed hawk that has nested above Cornell's athletic fields for over a decade, laid three eggs in March at a light tower; hatching is expected in late April or early May (drawing local birdwatchers' interest).  WENY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to flooding, Locke Road in Lansing is closed between West Road and the county line and Algerine Road is shut between Lansing Station and Ludlow Roads while Lockerby Hill Road has sustained damage; drivers should find alternate routes until safety is confirmed.  607 News Now
  • Tompkins County announced that the Code Blue shelter at 227 Cherry Street will remain open through April 30 to offer overnight shelter and a daytime warming center during its first winter season. The facility opened on Nov. 24 and will continue serving those in need while emergency shelter options stay available.  Tompkins County
  • New population data from the Cornell Program on Applied Demographics shows Tompkins County grew slightly from 2010 but declined after 2020 due to dorm closures during COVID, while Cortland County dropped steadily from over 49,000 in 2010 to 45,850 in 2025 with a brief rise in 2024.  607 News Now
