CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell University Library will launch three new exhibits on Earth’s biodiversity on April 16 at Mann Library — the displays use historical records and photography to show how species face local and global threats, with a talk on bird conservation at 4 p.m. at the library.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Ithaca Tompkins International Airport will host a community art gala on Saturday, Apr. 11, with local artwork, live music, vendors, and family activities in its terminal — the free event partners with MIX Art Gallery and Cornell’s Sustainable Design Group while offering on-site parking and #32 TCAT access.  607 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report shows a single adult in Tompkins County must earn $25.08 an hour to cover basic expenses—about a 1% rise from last year's $24.82—as released by the Tompkins County Workers Center and Cornell's Co-Labs; legislators are now studying a countywide minimum wage.  The Ithaca Voice

  • At the meeting on April 6 at the Taughannock Falls room (Campus Center), the Ithaca College Student Governance Council reviewed the draft Residential Hall Association handbook and discussed the Accessible Living Residential Learning Community proposal set to launch Fall 2027 pending a year-long review.   • Cornell's Hack4Impact project builds free software for nonprofits addressing issues like food insecurity and healthcare, saving partners roughly $550,000 (per this year’s annual report).   • A flood warning remains active in Ithaca as Cayuga Lake holds at 384.1ft—above the 383.5ft flood stage—and forecasters expect a crest of 384.3ft early this morning after heavy rainfall last week.  607 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After 22 years of service, Jared Gebel was promoted to deputy chief of the Ithaca Fire Department + he will lead firefighter training and operations, with Chief Michael Moody praising his strong leadership.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Tompkins County said the Code Blue shelter at 227 Cherry Street remains open through April 30 to provide low-barrier overnight and daytime services for up to 70 people (operated by Volunteers of America), ensuring a safe space during colder nights.  Tompkins Weekly
