COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ithaca Fever premiered at The Cherry Arts on April 11 and will run through April 20 while a film festival and TEDxCornell are set for today at the Cornell University Schwartz Center for Performing Arts and The Statler Hotel, and a Sunday egg-dyeing workshop is scheduled at Good Neighbor Grocery on April 13. A climate literature discussion and a transportation tool launch will take place on April 17, followed by a Firebrand Books conference at Ithaca College on April 19 and later fundraisers including the Daffodil Dash and 4-H Duck Race to support local programs.  Ithaca Journal

  • Ithaca Coffee Company will close its Triphammer Marketplace location on Sunday and reopen at 702 Hancock Street on April 21 — the company spent 20 years in Lansing and will hold a grand opening in June.  607 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ithaca Reggae Fest will run for three days in June on the shores of Cayuga Lake + beginning with a free block party at Stewart Park on Friday, June 20th from 5-9 p.m. Advance ticket prices will increase on April 22nd + the festival will feature music acts, yoga, cultural celebrations, and a voter registration drive.  14850

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rafaela Uzan, a senior at Cornell in the College of Arts and Sciences, was selected on April 11 to join the Gaither Junior Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; she is the 15th Cornellian honored since 2000.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Three Cornellians—current doctoral candidate Max Gotts and alumni Carina Shiau ’21 and Syed Tahmid Mahbub ’17—were named among 30 recipients of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans on April 11. The fellowship will provide up to $90,000 toward graduate studies for immigrants and children of immigrants chosen from over 2,600 applicants.  Cornell Chronicle
  • On April 23, the 27th annual Bits On Our Minds event will show almost 48 digital projects by Cornell students in the Duffield Hall atrium from 4-6 p.m. (the projects include apps, robots, and games) and will give six awards of $1,000 each (three from faculty, two from sponsors, and one overall) as sponsors LinkedIn and InfoSys take part.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ithaca’s Common Council voted on April 9 to advance legislation adopting new FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps that will take effect on June 18 to keep the city in the National Flood Insurance Program. The updated maps expand the floodplain to include about 750 residential properties—up from 100—and residents with federally backed mortgages must buy flood insurance.  Ithaca.com
  • The town of Dryden is asking contractors to submit bids for a pedestrian bridge over Route 13 as part of the Dryden Rail Trail project; bids will be accepted until May 8th.  607 News Now

  • Today, Cornell women’s lacrosse honors its seniors against Harvard at 12 p.m. while the men’s team meets Syracuse at 4 p.m. on a neutral site; Ithaca College lacrosse plays St. Lawrence at 12 p.m. and SUNY Cortland softball hosts Oswego in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The Binghamton Black Bears contest Danbury tonight at 7:15 p.m. and Poughkeepsie at 7 p.m., the Syracuse Crunch hosts Lehigh Valley tonight at 7 p.m. and Laval at 7 p.m., and the Knicks take on the Cavaliers tonight at 7:30 p.m.—all games affecting team standings.  607 News Now
