  • Shared Kitchen Ithaca is a new non-profit community kitchen that opened April 21 to help local food entrepreneurs overcome high equipment costs and access a 4,000-square-foot facility with commercial ovens, chillers, and other essential tools—low- and moderate-income owners may receive fee assistance.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Shared Kitchen Ithaca has opened its 4,000 square foot not-for-profit kitchen at 700 W. Buffalo St that offers professional-grade equipment for local food entrepreneurs—and it provides business support and reduced-cost membership options to help them grow.  Ithaca Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sixteen doctoral students from Ithaca and NYC traveled to Capitol Hill on April 9 to meet with lawmakers including Rep. Josh Riley, and they emphasized the need for stable federal funding amid cuts affecting research—federal grants from agencies like NIH and DOE were a key concern.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Princeton professor Michael Gordin will give the first Guerlac Lecture on April 30 at 5 p.m. in the A.D. White House Guerlac Room to celebrate Henry Guerlac's legacy as a key historian who helped preserve the A.D. White House — Cornell plans to make the lecture series annual.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Students from Cornell’s Sustainable Design team worked with city departments over two years to compile the detailed data needed for Ithaca to meet strict LEED criteria. Ithaca earned Gold certification after the students resubmitted the application in November — a milestone that now guides future sustainability planning.  Cornell Chronicle
  • April is Earth Month and encourages people to help protect our planet by reducing waste with eco friendly products. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Planning is underway for Tompkins County’s new homeless shelter on Ithaca’s West End after a 26-bed facility closed last fall. County leaders purchased a one-acre parcel on Cherry Street for $1 million and opened bidding on a 30,000 square-foot facility with up to 100 beds—targeting a December 2027 opening.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Senior pitcher Anna Cornell broke the Ithaca College softball career strikeout record in a doubleheader against Clarkson on April 18 — the Bombers lost the first game 6-4 and won the second game 13-1.
