CULTURE NEWS

  • The Friends of Tompkins County Public Library will begin its annual Spring Book Sale on Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Esty St. location, featuring special offers each weekend and purchase limits on the first day; proceeds support library grants and literacy projects.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • William B. Gould IV spoke at Ives Hall on April 9 during the ILR School’s Union Days event, recalling career milestones, his early Cornell connections, and his memoir that details his work at the National Labor Relations Board. The talk underscored his influence in labor law.  Cornell Chronicle
  • President Michael I. Kotlikoff and Cornell professors Olga Boudker, Cathy Caruth and Francesca Molinari were elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on April 22, and their induction is scheduled for October in Cambridge + the honor is shared with 252 outstanding members.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Tanya Brown was named Ithaca College's next chief human resources officer and associate vice president; she will begin on June 15 and brings valuable experience (ex-Vanderbilt chief of staff) from a nationwide search following Kirra Micheler's departure.  The Ithacan
  • Three Cornell undergraduates received Robinson-Appel Humanitarian Awards, each gaining $2,500 for community projects to support groups from Tompkins County to overseas communities. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County’s clerk office has reinstated naturalization ceremonies – three events are planned for May, July, and September. The move ends a USCIS halt from November 2025.  WSKG
  • Tompkins County approved a resolution Tuesday to seek $15 million for a new homeless shelter on Cherry Street; construction will begin in 2028 with the county covering $3 million, and Volunteers of America will operate the three-story building once it is complete.  The Ithaca Voice

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health data show that flu and COVID trends are dropping as Tompkins County cases decline to 2 per 100,000 and statewide COVID hospitalizations fall from 13 to 10 — although Seneca County experienced a slight uptick.  14850

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ithaca College softball won a doubleheader against Cortland on Tuesday—each game decided by one run—and senior Cate Murray led a 3-2 and 4-3 win that improved the team's record to 20-7 during a six-game win streak.  607 News Now
