BUSINESS NEWS

  • Walmart will remodel its stores in Ithaca and Watkins Glen as part of a statewide project updating 23 locations by the end of 2026 - these upgrades include new fixtures, widened aisles, and improved grocery pickup spaces.  Ithaca Journal
  • Avery Sheppard won $25,000 at the Hospitality Business Plan Competition on Apr. 18 at the Statler Auditorium to boost her Purvis Fish & Chips. She plans to add new locations while keeping the original eatery that earned nearly $1.5 million and hires 15 workers each summer.  Cornell Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students from Cornell will perform at Lincoln Hall today at 3 p.m. for a free percussion show on East Hill — the ensemble will feature a range of drums, including an unusual squeaky toy.  607 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ithaca received a $10 million award from New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative for projects along West Martin Luther King Jr. and West State Street corridors (a Strategic Investment Plan is in the works), while Tompkins County approved $160,270 in tourism grants to support local festivals, cultural events, and outdoor recreation through spring.  14850

  • Ithaca College provided same-day counseling after junior Everett Moore died by suicide on April 22 and held a celebration of life today at 4 p.m. in Muller Chapel. The school postponed its annual IC Giving Day to April 29-30 (responding to the tragedy).  607 News Now
  • Generac portable generators sold at major retailers, including Home Depot, Lowe’s and Costco between May 2025 and Feb. 2026 are being recalled for gas leaks — New York customers should stop using them and check serial numbers for free repairs or a refund.  Ithaca Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Billie Jo Heffron, a Cornell worker who starred on TLC’s 'Suddenly Amish,' is set to embrace a simpler life — she is meeting with TLC for another season and blends a longtime love for hip hop with an interest in Amish traditions.  The Ithaca Voice

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cornell will host a lacrosse doubleheader at Schoellkopf Field today with the men's team playing Harvard at noon and the women's team facing Yale at 3:30 p.m. The men's squad is riding a four-game win streak while the women have lost three of their last four matches.  607 News Now
  • Ithaca College track and field teams held their first home meet in a decade on April 21 at the new Egan Family Track and Field Complex, where athletes from six schools set season highs and inaugural records. The teams now prepare to travel to Rochester today for the Cardinal Classic.  The Ithacan
  • The Ithaca College softball team swept SUNY Cortland in two close games on April 21, winning 3-2 and 4-3 and extending its winning streak (since 2016). They will play at RIT on April 26 in Rochester.  The Ithacan
