- ➤ On Friday, April 25th, The Tarps played at Hopshire Farm & Brewery; today, the Newfield Public Library hosts a book sale from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the Ithaca Downtown Conference Center holds a record fair from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while Sunday, April 27th will bring the Tompkins 4-H Duck Race at 11:00 a.m. and the Big Red Marching Band spring concert from noon to 3:00 p.m. 607 News Now
- ➤ On April 10, the Ithaca Sciencenter learned that nearly $500,000 in federal money was cut, and its executive director said the museum will soon share plans for moving ahead + explain how the loss will affect its programs. The museum is working to inform the community about upcoming changes to its operations. WENY

- ➤ Spring Writes will bring over 40 events and more than 100 creators to Ithaca from May 7th to May 11th with 23 free live events at downtown venues. It will also host free Zoom sessions from May 15th to May 22nd and eight writing workshops through September—one featuring a collaborative session with the county poet laureate on July 5th. - ➤ A monthlong event called 'We Are La Voz' will begin May 2 in downtown Ithaca with an opening reception at Orozco Gallery Pop-Up — Cornell faculty, students and local community members have organized a series of artist talks, musical performances and story times to spotlight Latine artists. - ➤ High school students attended a Cornell outreach event on April 12 where they experimented by making bath bombs, extracting DNA, and even creating ice cream with liquid nitrogen using engineering methods–a program aimed at sparking interest in STEM careers. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at Cornell and the USGS found that adding selenium helped mayfly larvae limit mercury buildup at low mercury levels—but at high mercury levels, it increased mercury accumulation. The study warns that mayflies may carry more mercury from water to land, which could harm local wildlife. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ Irene Weiser—who led local efforts to stop fracking—has announced her run for District 13 on the Tompkins County Legislature, which covers Caroline and Danby, and she brings years of local government experience from her time on the Caroline board. - ➤ Fire departments in Tompkins, Cortland and Tioga counties are hosting recruiting and open house events this weekend under the RecruitNY campaign to attract new volunteers. - ➤ Today, New York Times bestselling author Maia Szalavitz spoke at the Tompkins County Public Library about using harm reduction to help people with addiction. She shared her experience with heroin and noted that countries using harm reduction see fewer HIV infections and better health outcomes—her talk was part of the Information Saves Lives Project funded by local health groups.
