COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This Saturday, May 2, community members in Trumansburg will join hands in beautification efforts at the Farmers Market and Enfield Elementary School. Volunteers will plant pollinator habitats, clean up, and help fourth graders distribute seeds as part of the school’s annual beautification day.  14850

  • Ithaca Voice won two awards in the NYPA Better Newspaper Contest, with Senior Reporter Megan Zerez and former reporter Judy Lucas winning first in Online Breaking News and photographer Casey Martin taking second in Photographer of the Year+ their work was honored for key coverage on a federal immigration case.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Ariana Kim, a Grammy nominee and music professor, will host a listening party on May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Hans Bethe House Common Room on West Campus to perform two solo pieces for her album (un)common thread, set to release May 26.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Ithaca moviegoers have a busy week as Cornell Cinema holds its final semester screenings starting Monday, Apr. 27, featuring Sensory Ethnography + Rosemead with additional films through Thursday, while Cinemapolis previews upcoming titles on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and Regal Ithaca Mall offers mainstream releases.  14850

  • Ithaca High School teacher Michelle Lee advanced into the quarterfinals of America’s Favorite Teacher competition, aiming to bring Bill Nye for a school assembly. The fundraiser supports space education by The Planetary Society (co-founded by Ithaca native Carl Sagan).  607 News Now
  • A Cornell study from the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management finds that streaming platforms control music listening when artists face controversy (reduced playlist visibility led to stream declines for R.   • Ithaca College will hire Tanya Brown as its next chief human resources officer starting mid-June; she comes from Vanderbilt University and earned her master’s degree in HR strategic management from Bellevue University while current officer Kirra Micheler stays until Brown begins.  607 News Now

  • Climate activist Leah Stokes spoke to Cornell students and faculty on Thursday, Apr. 23 at the Physical Sciences Building about her 'carbon wave' approach, which calls for group climate action over individual efforts + the event was co-sponsored by several Cornell centers.  The Cornell Daily Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction crews are gathering materials today near the intersection of Fall Creek Drive and Stewart Avenue for the Stewart Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project that will replace structural components and pave work near Cornell University. The closure will begin Monday, May 4 and continue until mid-November.  607 News Now
  • Seneca Street Parking Garage remains closed as city officials study safety concerns after debris fell from its third floor on April 10. Sidewalks on Tioga, Seneca & Aurora and the nearby TCAT bus stop are closed until scaffolding is installed to protect pedestrians.  The Ithaca Voice

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bombers opened their three-game series with a 9-4 win over Hobart on April 23, led by junior Danny Drotos through six innings. They play their final regular season game today at 4 p.m. at SUNY Brockport.  The Ithacan
  • Lansing tennis team, with 20 new players, aims to win a fourth IAC title after winning three championships and earning four wins in six matches by April 27. Coach RJ Malabanan focuses on learning from each match and helping the team enjoy the game as the season continues.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Cornell’s men tennis team won the Ivy League title after beating Columbia 4-3 on Saturday at Reis Tennis Center, earning an automatic NCAA Tournament bid with Rodrigo Fernandes’ match-winning volley in the final set.  The Cornell Daily Sun
