  • R&B singer Kehlani posted on Instagram that she is anti-genocide after Cornell cancelled her as Slope Day's headliner on May 7—Cornell has not announced a replacement act.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 300 graduate students volunteered to host the Expanding Your Horizons conference on April 5, offering hands-on STEM workshops for 320 middle and high school students across New York while an organizing team of 37 grad students + two postdocs and a faculty advisor coordinated lab tours, workshops and science demonstrations.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Misty Copeland, the first Black woman to be named principal dancer of American Ballet Theatre, will deliver the Senior Convocation keynote address on May 22 at Barton Hall from 1—2:30 p.m. The student-run committee announced the choice on April 28 and plans the event to honor the graduating class.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Harvard computer scientist Cynthia Dwork will speak at Cornell from May 5 to May 7 as part of the University and Messenger Lecture Series — she will explain how differential privacy protects data using the 2010 census as an example.   • Nine Cornell doctoral candidates were inducted into the Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society at the Yale Bouchet Conference held on April 4 and 5 in New Haven, Connecticut.   • Tompkins County Highway Department will begin chip sealing work on roads in Ithaca, Enfield and Danby at 7 a.m. today—drivers on Sheffield, Bostwick and Hillview Road may face delays as one lane stays open— to extend the roads’ lifespan.  14850

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local developer Charlie O’Connor has pitched a revised plan to redevelop a Collegetown site at 201 Oak Avenue by tearing down the old building and building a new 43,725 square-foot apartment complex with 46 units and 91 bedrooms plus design features that ease fire access and create green space. The city board gave formal consent to refine the proposal and noted changes in facade materials to better match the local style.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Coach Mike Schafer delivered his first Last Lecture on April 23 in Baker Lab before about 600 students and alumni—he reflected on his 30-year career and shared lessons on leadership and hard work before his upcoming retirement.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell men’s lacrosse senior CJ Kirst scored his 225th career goal on Saturday against Dartmouth, breaking the NCAA Division I all-time goal record as his team won 10-8—teammates crowded him during the celebration as they prepare for a home game against Yale at 4 p.m. Friday.  607 News Now
