COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Late April rain ended just as local farmers markets began expanding their hours; the Ithaca Farmers Market now operates Saturdays at Steamboat Landing and will add Sunday and Wednesday sessions next week + Trumansburg and Freeville Farmers Markets resume seasonal outdoor events with plans for additional weekday hours to offer fresh produce and prepared foods.  14850

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senior Devon Jezek, a documentary studies and production major, has created films that address tough political and social issues—she won an award at the Cayuga Film Festival for her film Without Shame, Without Stigma, Without Fear. Jezek, originally from Texas, said her background inspired her senior thesis film Pages of Protest on book bans and human rights, and her trip to Texas in October 2024 added vital footage to the project.  The Ithacan
  • Cornell University’s anthropology department will open its new Collaboratory on May 14 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Olin Library—bringing together collections and laboratories that were previously housed in renovated areas of McGraw Hall.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Senior Ren Kato, an international student from Tokyo, founded the Japanese Learning Club in Fall 2024 to offer courses in Japanese culture & language by leading bi-monthly sessions on campus.   • Matthew Velasco, an assistant professor of anthropology, and Anna Whittemore, a doctoral candidate, received awards from the Society for American Archaeology at the annual meeting on April 25—recognizing their contributions to scholarship. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The CFCU building on the Commons will undergo window replacement starting May 5 at 7 a.m. Teams will work for about 3 weeks until May 21 & pedestrians must follow posted reroutes while work proceeds, with building access remaining open.  City of Ithaca
  • Veronica Pillar is running for re-election in District 2, where she will face tough issues like housing. In November, Tompkins County purchased land on Cherry Street to build a permanent homeless shelter—local motels will continue to serve as temporary housing until it opens.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell researchers found that studies on COVID-19 disparities missed key insights because they focused on white Americans’ views rather than those of groups hit hardest by the pandemic—these groups were more willing to work to fix health gaps. The experiments showed that adding context about long-term discrimination increased support for policies aimed at reducing health inequities.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Today, NAMI Finger Lakes holds its third annual mental health walk at Stewart Park on the Cayuga Lake waterfront at 3 p.m. to raise $50,000 as families and organizations join a one-mile walk or 5K run; online registration ends at 10 a.m. while walk-up registration will be available.  14850
