COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tompkins County’s Soap for Hope drive runs from April 27 to June 8, collecting soap, shampoo and other essentials for Catholic Charities' Samaritan Center. Donors can drop off items at local sites and at Catholic Charities (324 W. Buffalo Street) during office hours.  Tompkins Weekly

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ithaca’s artisan cooperative Handwork marks its 50th anniversary this year by showcasing local art including jewelry, ceramics and photography at its downtown store on the corner of Cayuga and State streets. Members met on April 27 to discuss membership and upcoming events, setting a course for future community engagement.  The Ithaca Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Cornell, 15% of 33 Student Assembly resolutions have been rejected in the 2025-2026 term — a sharp rise from the 2% rejection rate last term; leaders say miscommunication with President Kotlikoff and delayed submissions have boosted the return rate to 27%.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Cornell University Library surprised four student workers with the Fuerst Outstanding Student Employee Award today - they received a $1,000 prize for dependability and professionalism at Mann, Math, and Law Libraries.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Student Jeffrey Ho ’26 curated the first student exhibit at RMC (Public Health on the Hill) in Kroch Library, displaying archival materials on the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 crises. The exhibit runs through June 10.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell hosted its fourth Community Engagement Awards at the Statler Hotel Ballroom on April 22 to honor students, faculty, and staff for building community partnerships in Ithaca — enhancing local engagement.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell researchers developed a new computational model that shows how insects use wing beat and body physics to maintain stable flight for flapping-wing robots. The study, published May 1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, identifies key traits like wing mass ratio and beat frequency.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a $542 million plan to expand high-speed internet to 58,617 unserved and underserved areas, including rural communities near Ithaca. Nine providers will use fiber, fixed wireless & satellite technologies, and the state will now submit awards for environmental review before construction begins.  Ithaca Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tompkins Environmental Health is seeking a medium to large black labrador that bit a person on Saturday evening near the Ithaca College Emerson Hall dorm while checking its vaccination during a ten-day observation to rule out rabies; anyone with information should call 607-274-6688.  14850

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Cornell hosted Princeton at Schoellkopf Field in the Ivy League tournament and lost 19-9 in a rematch following their regular season win. The team will host Johns Hopkins on May 9 at 5:00 p.m.—hoping to reverse their fortunes in the NCAA Tournament.  Tompkins Weekly
  • After clinching top seed with an 11-9 win over Harvard last Saturday, Cornell hosted the Ivy League men’s lacrosse tournament at Schoellkopf Field and beat the rival Crimson 17-8 in the semifinal. The win builds momentum as the team prepares to defend its NCAA title on May 9.  Tompkins Weekly
