CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell will have Atlanta-based rapper Gunna headline Slope Day on May 7th — he replaces Kehlani after her invitation was rescinded over political concerns. Gunna’s album One of Wun debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students shared innovative projects including self-watering planters, transformative fashion, and a reimagined classroom at the Cornell Fashion & Design Expo on April 25—an annual juried exhibition hosted by the Department of Human Centered Design that honored Cornell Human Ecology’s centennial.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Researchers at the College of Human Ecology have developed LivingLoom—an approach that weaves chia seeds into a hydrogel to create wearable textiles that grow when cared for—to test a new bond between people and plants. The study, led by doctoral student Jingwen Zhu and supported by several research grants, was published on April 25 and won a Best Paper award at CHI ’25.  Cornell Chronicle

  • Danby officials are considering a flood damage prevention law that will set new rules on flood barriers and on dredging and grading to reduce harm to public facilities and private property and to protect lives. Residents can share their input today at 6 p.m. at Danby Town Hall — the hearing will offer further details on erosion controls— as the town examines the proposed law.  607 News Now
  • Ithaca officials removed banners from fences on North Meadow Street after property owners and the state DOT complained that the signs distracted drivers + the city advised those with removed signs to call the Building Division for pick up and noted that temporary signs require proper permits.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell University's Poole Lab is starting a 12‑week study to learn how whole grains versus fruits and vegetables affect the gut microbiome of adults with BMIs between 25 and 30 — participants will follow defined diets, give stool and saliva samples, and join brief nutrition sessions.  607 News Now
  • Cornell researchers developed a new computer method called SeedbankTree that builds a genealogy of dormant bacteria like tuberculosis and estimates key details such as mutation rates and revival time. The study—published on May 2 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences—will help guide future tracking of new pathogen strains.  Cornell Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cornell men’s lacrosse won the Ivy League Tournament title with a 20—15 defeat of Princeton on Sunday while Ithaca College women’s lacrosse and SUNY Cortland secured wins of 14—13 over Union and 19—9 over Oneonta, respectively—local teams celebrated strong finishes in their conference matchups. In other sports news, the Knicks begin their playoff series against Boston tonight at 7 p.m., the Binghamton Black Bears took a 2—0 series lead in the Commissioner’s Cup Finals and will try to clinch the title on Friday, and the Mets lost a doubleheader on Sunday before returning to the diamond tonight at 9:40 p.m.  607 News Now
  • Cornell beat Princeton 20-15 in the Ivy League championship and earned the top seed in the NCAA tournament—Cornell will host the winner of the Albany vs. Siena game at Schoellkopf Field at 7:30 p.m. on May 11th.  14850
