Good morning, Ithaca. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The third annual Newfield Greenup Day will be held on Saturday, May 10 with volunteers registering from 9 a.m. to noon at the town hall on Main St — they will receive grabbers, bags, and reflective vests provided by the Cayuga Watershed Network. The Newfield Highway Department will pick up the filled bags on May 12 and deliver the trash for free disposal through Tompkins County.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Last week, the Ithaca Times was transferred to local non-profit Pathways to Equity, Inc.—a move that begins a new chapter as longtime publisher Jim Bilinski retires after over 50 years, remaining for one year as publisher emeritus to aid the transition. The paper will now shift to community-supported journalism with a focus on local news and new revenue methods.  Ithaca.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • After Cornell University canceled R&B artist Kehlani’s invitation to Slope Day because of her alleged antisemitic and anti-Israel comments, the school quickly secured rapper Gunna as headliner while student groups organized an alternative celebration. The Community Slope Day concert will be held today at Stone Bend Farm at 11 a.m.—a free event featuring local and regional acts that will also raise funds for UNRWA.  The Ithaca Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

The project funds work such as planting trees and building support programs and is studied by researchers to see how giving builds youth purpose—showing a need for more opportunities for young contributors.  Cornell Chronicle
  • The Ithaca College Student Governance Council held its final meeting on May 5 where new members were confirmed, graduating seniors were honored, and candidates presented plans for roles such as easing credit transfers and supporting student athletes—14 positions remain open with elections planned for Fall.  The Ithacan
