COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students at Cornell and other SUNY schools receive $400 each from the SUNY Contribution Project to support local projects; an Ithaca group uses the funds to purchase essentials for people in transitional housing — a step that bridges gaps in community support.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell’s Canvas system was down for six hours on Thursday after a cyberattack disrupted courses during exam prep; IT and faculty are providing exam alternatives with finals scheduled this weekend. The university is monitoring the incident and updating the community via IT alerts (the breach is contained).  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • Nine Cornell students and graduates (from CALS, CHE, CVM and ILR) were awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence for outstanding academic and community achievements. The systemwide recognition ceremony took place in late April at the Albany Capital Center.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell faculty and students recommend personalized study sessions as finals approach, using timed focus periods and brief mental breaks — such as a walk or a quick cafe visit — to reduce fatigue and improve concentration.   • On April 30, the Office of Inclusive Excellence at Cornell Duffield College of Engineering recognized outstanding students, organizations and staff with annual awards.   • The Cornell AAUP Chapter is calling for an independent investigation into the Day Hall incident involving President Kotlikoff and his treatment of students and is hosting a Zoom town hall today at 3 p.m. to discuss campus governance.  The Cornell Daily Sun
  • The Ithaca City School District Board of Education approved sending its $177.6 million budget proposal for the 2026 to 2027 school year to voters for a May 19 ballot — after a narrow vote on April 14, a public hearing is set for May 12 at 5:30 p.m. in York Hall.  Ithaca.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell will install a small biodigester at the Teaching Dairy this summer, turning cow manure and food scraps into energy for research + training on sustainable waste systems.  Cornell Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ithaca Beer Company and The Sophie Fund are teaming up throughout May to share mental health resources in Tompkins County. Visitors will receive a card with local mental health provider contacts and a simple safety plan, and can attend talks hosted by NAMI Finger Lakes and the local crisis service.  607 News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Administrators at TC3 are reviewing all student activities as an increase in post-traditional enrollment shifts campus needs, and the women’s basketball team is fighting to keep its program. Players have launched a petition while coaches pause recruitment this season amid uncertainty over future offerings.  The Ithaca Voice
