CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 3, Cornell creative writers led a poetry workshop at the Ithaca Children’s Garden where children explored nature and wrote poems. The event gave young participants a chance to connect with the outdoors+ the light rain added a special touch to their creative work.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell University confirmed that the second red-tailed hawk egg hatched Wednesday in a nest high above campus, leaving two chicks while a third egg shows signs of hatching soon. The hawk parents, Big Red and Arthur, are longtime local residents whose live nest cam draws steady attention—local viewers follow the family’s progress.  WENY
  • Cornell researchers developed a computer tool that uses weather data to predict how wildfire smoke cuts solar panel output—helping grid operators plan energy use.   • On May 7, Ithaca Common Council unanimously approved a pilot update to its homeless encampments policy — alderperson Patrick Kuehl noted it does not cover every issue — and $800,001 from the 2025 capital projects budget will support its rollout.  607 News Now
  • The Tompkins County Clerk’s Office is hosting the first Naturalization Ceremony for new American citizens at the Tompkins County Courthouse (320 N Tioga Street, Ithaca) on May 15 at 1:30 p.m. Tompkins County Administrator Korsah Akumfi will speak while the League of Women's Voters registers voters and Kiwanis Club members provide light refreshments.  Tompkins County
  • Tompkins County voters received a postcard from the Board of Elections that provided key information about the Primary and General Elections including Early Voting dates, political jurisdiction, and polling place details.   • Ithaca Common Council approved an ADU bill last night—allowing accessory dwelling units on existing properties to create more housing options. The bill aims to support efficient use of housing stock and provide accessible living choices while respecting neighborhood design.  607 News Now

  • Cornell men’s lacrosse clinched its NCAA Tournament spot with a 20-15 win over Princeton on May 4—earning the Ivy League championship and a 14-1 record.
