COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ithaca Farmers Market is in the running for Newsweek Readers' Choice Awards and locals can vote once per day until noon on June 5 to help decide the winner. The market competes with others like Ann Arbor Farmers Market, Boston Public Market, Lancaster Central Market, Pike Place Market, and Union Square Greenmarket.  14850
  • The Wonderful Wheelchairs team works at Cayuga Skilled Nursing every Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m.—volunteers repair and maintain wheelchairs, scooters and rollators to help seniors stay mobile. Donations and special software help adjust devices for users with tremors, keeping about 80 wheelchairs in working order.  Tompkins Weekly

CRIME NEWS

  • Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies arrested two individuals for stealing from parked cars on Whitetail Drive in Ithaca on May 8th—Christopher Palmer-Thompson, 21 from Dryden, and Ismail Abdur-Razzaaq, 18 from Ithaca; a search of their vehicle found items believed to be stolen, and they are charged with burglary and grand larceny.  607 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 7, Ithaca's Common Council voted to adopt a new pilot policy to manage homeless encampments on city land and a report that uses community input. City staff will soon begin planning with local partners — officials say the policy builds on past lessons — as they work to help those without shelter.  City of Ithaca
  • Tompkins County Consolidated Area Transit will change its bus routes and pickup times from May 25 to August 16; printed schedules are available by phone, email, or mail—riders can use the updated Bus Tracker and mobile apps for real-time info. Route 22 will run on weekdays starting June 30, and other routes, including those serving college campuses and outdoor destinations, will adjust stops and timings—helping riders plan their summer trips.  Ithaca Journal

  • Ithaca is starting several new building projects as Meadow on Seneca begins affordable and supportive housing work in mid-September and SouthWorks gets ready for FOUND's move to a new industrial space, while The Aurora and The Breeze apartment projects are also underway.   • Top-ranked Cornell men’s lacrosse, led by CJ Kirst, will face Richmond in a quarterfinal on May 17 at Hofstra’s James M. Shuart Stadium as they seek a 15th Final Four appearance — Maryland’s team, headed by coach John Tillman and goalie Logan McNaney, will play Georgetown on May 18. Ithaca High alumna Shea Baker plays for Boston College in a women’s quarterfinal today at 5 p.m. and former Ithaca High standout Alecia Nicholas starts for North Carolina in a match today at 7:30 p.m.  Ithaca Journal
  • Cornell’s new artificial turf field for Big Red field hockey was approved by the Town of Ithaca’s Planning Board on May 6—approval challenges and environmental concerns were raised and no firm completion date has been set.  607 News Now
