- ➤ In Dryden, Laura Lusk has been named the new director of Southworth Library effective July 7—she replaces retiring director Diane Pamel. Lusk, a longtime local volunteer, plans to work with community groups and local organizations to enhance library programs. Tompkins Weekly
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Brian Wansink will host the Rocking the Nursing Home workshop on Saturday, May 31 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Savage Club's Lansing Area Performance Hall to help musicians practice entertaining memory care residents—another session is planned for Saturday, Sept. 20 with funding from a $470 Community Arts Partnership grant. - ➤ On May 14, the Graduate School Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement presented the 2025 Distinguished Awards at G10 Biotech to 17 graduate community members for their work advancing access, engagement and belonging—an event that honored service and leadership. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Cornell will hold two Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2025 at Schoellkopf Field on May 24 with President Michael I. Kotlikoff delivering the address during the 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. services—both events will be livestreamed and require tickets emailed to graduates for guest entry. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Ithaca City School District is holding its annual election today where voters will choose four board members and decide on a proposed budget and bus purchase plan. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A computer model study from Cornell showed that many methods to improve soil, like using cover crops and avoiding tilling, help cut greenhouse gases—these methods rarely boost crop yields. The study shows that soil type and weather will guide farmers in choosing practices that balance climate change with crop needs. Cornell Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Ithaca said Paul F. Vitale Construction began a sidewalk improvement project on May 19th on the 600 to 800 blocks of Mitchell Street on the east hill, replacing concrete sidewalks, ADA curb ramps and drainage improvements near Belle Sherman Elementary School. Eastbound traffic was closed at Cornell Street from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays until the project is completed on June 6. 14850
- ➤ TCAT will add five new diesel buses that will replace older ones when they arrive in Ithaca this summer—General Manager Matthew Rosenbloom-Jones previewed them in California and said they will soon be road tested. He said the transit company will also get new battery-electric buses later this year. 607 News Now
