COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Multiple construction projects near Cornell are underway including a new 13400 square foot fire station at 403 Elmwood Avenue set to open by July 1 — and an expansion at the Roitman Chabad Center that adds dining and community facilities. Other projects like the Breeze Apartments and a new infill building at 601 East State Street are progressing and aim to reshape local development. The Ithaca Voice

- ➤ On May 18, Ithaca College honored Disney CEO Bob Iger with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree—fellow alum David Muir surprised Iger by introducing him as graduates applauded the moment. - ➤ Brooks School launched its Cornell Engaged College initiative with support from the Einhorn Center for Community Engagement by hiring Public Policy Engagement Coordinator Becky Warner + postdoctoral fellow Megan Dias to boost community and policy partnerships. Senior Associate Dean Jamila Michener said the new team will build on engaged learning and long-term links with community partners for policy work. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Newfield Central School District started a $21 million capital project that upgrades the bus garage - the first improvement - and adds track resurfacing and security updates for school safety. The bus garage work began on May 12 and will continue through summer while track area construction will finish by the end of summer. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ Voters in the Ithaca City School District and nearby districts cast ballots Tuesday night on school board candidates and proposed budgets for next school year— in Ithaca, a $169 million operating budget with a 3.7% spending increase passed with about 78% approval while four board members were elected, and similar measures in Dryden, Groton, Lansing, Newfield and Trumansburg saw budgets and capital projects approved. The vote margins ranged from about 64% to 88% in favor, setting the stage for new terms and planned investments in local education. The Ithaca Voice

- ➤ Tompkins County faces a sharp rise in spotted lanternfly sightings this summer with the pest already seen on campus and along Fall Creek near Ithaca Falls Natural Area—experts say the insect may harm grape vines and disrupt outdoor wine tastings. At the same time the box tree moth has been spotted near Rochester and now threatens local boxwoods—officials and USDA researchers are monitoring the situation closely. Tompkins Weekly

- ➤ On May 16, a person was bitten on the hand along Dryden Rail Trail near the bridge before Keith Lane when a large dog with short grayish brown fur—accompanied by its owner and another large dog—bit while the person petted a different dog, and county officials are now monitoring the dog for ten days to rule out rabies risk. 14850
- ➤ Three projects on treating infections, fighting cancer and boosting the immune system have received $50,000 grants each from the Cornell Center for Immunology’s Multidisciplinary Seed Grants. The research teams from various Cornell departments will test ideas about formaldehyde’s effect on viruses, how bacterial stress influences infections and how special immune cells may work with melanoma treatments — research aimed at finding better health solutions.
