COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longview is nearly finished building a community garden funded by local donations and regional support—work on the main garden bed is complete, and fencing will soon be installed. Officials will hold a ribbon cutting in June while residents join a monthly garden club to share tasks and ideas.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Tompkins County approved all school budgets and related propositions on May 21, avoiding revotes from last year. Tax rates increased from 2.5% to over 3.7% and new board members — endorsed by teachers — were elected, with final results to be certified soon.  WSKG
  • Misty Copeland, a celebrated ballet dancer known for record-breaking roles, will speak at Cornell’s Senior Convocation today at 1pm in Barton Hall—she was chosen by the Class of 2025 for her trailblazing achievements—while the program also will feature student speakers, performances, and remarks from university leaders.  14850
  • New Cornell research shows that students in rural schools with on-site health clinics are 15% less likely to miss class — the study tracked over 66,000 students from 2015 to 2019. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell researchers and EDF are leading an international study to measure hydrogen emissions from operating facilities in North America and Europe using advanced sensors to guide leak detection and policy decisions.   • In the six weeks leading up to Earth Day, more than 200 Cornell student-athletes, coaches and community members competed in the EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup to support ocean health by funding coral restoration in the South Pacific.   • On May 13, a Dryden student collapsed after inhaling from a cannabis vape later confirmed to contain fentanyl—county officials warned residents to secure unlicensed cannabis products and carry Narcan to prepare for possible opioid overdoses.  Ithaca Journal
