- ➤ Ithaca’s Planning & Development Board praised early sketches of a Cornell community center on University Avenue designed for the Jewish student organization Grinspoon Hillel—it will include three stories plus a basement with a cafe, worship space, and recreation room. - ➤ Mary Beth Norton was honored on May 28 by Harvard’s Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences when she received the Centennial Medal — its highest alumni award — in recognition of her groundbreaking work in American history. The award marks a milestone as Norton, the first woman on the history faculty at Cornell, reshaped colonial women’s history. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Beth Ryan, a Cornell graduate student in chemistry and chemical biology, was chosen as a Young Scientist to attend the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in June—Germany will host more than 30 Nobel laureates and about 600 young scientists from around the world—she studies enzymes that shape cell membranes. - ➤ Steady rain in the Southern Tier ended drought conditions in Tompkins County, and the US Drought Monitor confirms the area is no longer abnormally dry—more showers are expected this weekend. This change follows months of dry conditions across part of the county. 607 News Now

- ➤ Tompkins County Whole Health is working with local partners to share prevention resources that guide parents to keep vape, cannabis, and tobacco products locked away—reducing the risk of poisoning among children and youth. The advisory also explains that adults should buy from licensed dispensaries and be ready with Narcan for opioid overdose emergencies. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ The American Red Cross said there is an emergency blood shortage and new donors are needed for drives from May 30 through June 24 at local sites — donors in May receive a solar lantern and those in June get an Amazon gift card. Donations help support patients with cancer, trauma, sickle cell, burns, and chronic illnesses, and most donors who are 16 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds can donate every 56 days. 14850

- ➤ Local officials and experts have released a guide that lists outdoor spots in Ithaca and the Finger Lakes for summer fun, including waterfalls, hiking trails, and scenic parks. - ➤ Vestal, Corning, Maine-Endwell and Chenango Forks won their Section 4 boys lacrosse championship games on Friday at Ithaca High School and Maine-Endwell and will advance to state quarterfinals on June 7 at Union-Endicott.
