COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During the week of May 26, Richford applied for a $30K grant to fix Rawley Park's pavilion roof and the Common Council considered a zoning change for bed-and-breakfast uses while Cornell's men's lacrosse team won the national title and CJ Kirst earned the Tewaaraton Award. A small plane declared an emergency on May 27 and landed safely at Ithaca Airport with no injuries reported.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Project Look Sharp, a nonprofit media literacy initiative at Ithaca College, earned national recognition from the American Association of School Librarians as one of the 2024 Best Digital Tools for Teaching — the initiative offers over 900 free lessons and workshops that help teachers improve students’ media literacy.  14850

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell University and SUNY ESF have received nearly $13,000 in state funding to study holes at the bottom of Seneca Lake to see if escaping gas and chemicals cause the booming sounds. The researchers will work with the DEC and the New York State Water Resources Institute—part of a $371,000 state grant for projects—to learn if these releases affect water quality.  607 News Now
  • A gardening column warns Ithaca residents that jumping worms—an invasive species from Asia—can harm gardens by eroding topsoil nutrients and advises washing plant roots and checking mulch to help stop their spread.  Ithaca Journal

  • The Tompkins County Office for the Aging needs help with yard work and household tasks for older adults with mobility issues. The agency is seeking volunteers or paid workers to serve rural areas outside Ithaca and can be reached at (607 274 5482).  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Guthrie Lourdes will provide free breast cancer screenings on June 4 at the Tompkins County Whole Health Department in Ithaca — the mobile van will then visit the Cortland County Office Building on June 5 for anyone aged 40 and up regardless of medical history.  607 News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Section 4 girls lacrosse all-star teams for the 2025 season have been announced with Ithaca players such as senior attack Ella Thomforde and junior goalie Kate Thomas earning first-team honors. The rosters span three divisions and include athletes from Horseheads, Corning, and other nearby communities—highlighting a strong mix of local and regional talent.  Ithaca Journal
