BUSINESS NEWS

  • Maguire Automotive Group will merge its Watkins Glen dealership into the larger Elmira Road site in Ithaca on Monday, June 8. The change will expand available services while all Watkins Glen employees remain with the company.  Ithaca Journal
  • Finger Lakes ReUse held its final day at Triphammer Marketplace on Saturday as it prepares to open a larger center next month in the former Big Lots space at Cayuga Shopping Center — the nonprofit will keep its Ithaca location on 214 Elmira Road open daily.  14850
  • Auntie Anne’s pretzel shop closed after a decade at the Shops at Ithaca Mall—Sicilian Delight remains in Café Square and Zocalo Mexican Bar and Grill, which has operated since 2019 in the former Friendly’s location, to serve local customers.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell Duffield College of Engineering announced an investment of up to $7.25M to boost its Engineering Innovations in Medicine initiative over the next three years, supporting interdisciplinary research, fellowships and workshops (including Menopause Health Engineering and new educational pathways) to improve biomedical data use.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Nearly a dozen doctoral students from Cornell and Weill Cornell Medicine honed their research communication skills at the AAAS CASE workshop in Washington + D.C. in mid-April, where they learned to use their voice in federal budget discussions.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Brooks senior Will Moss ’26 has created the Health and AI Policy Index — HAPI — a public database that will help policymakers, researchers and health systems track emerging healthcare AI regulations. His work could shape clearer guidelines for safe technology use in medicine.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Eighteen Cornell faculty and staff plus Roger Figueroa from Human Ecology were recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s awards today. The honors acknowledge their exceptional teaching, research and service across state contract colleges.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell researchers have built a new computing device that reads stored electric data through a 20-nm layer and tiny vibrating beam, which may lead to more energy-efficient AI and scientific computing; they plan to expand the design for complex tasks in the lab near campus.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell scientists used NASA data from the International Space Station to show that desert dust rich in iron may warm or cool the air by soaking up sunlight, cutting uncertainty in climate models by over six times + the study improves our picture of dust’s role in Earth’s energy balance.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County Area Transit launched eRide Ithaca on June 1 to fill transit gaps in underserved neighborhoods — the new electric microtransit pilot lets riders book $5 trips using an app or call center and adds free bus transfers at key stops.  Ithaca.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ithaca lacrosse teams won sectional titles over the weekend in Horseheads, with the girls beating Corning 18-9 and the boys clinching a dramatic win when Isaac Lee-Byrnes scored with 12 seconds remaining. The girls will face a Section III champion on Thursday in sub-regionals at home.  Tompkins Weekly
