  • Local journalist Maddy Vogel, 21, became the youngest managing editor at the Ithaca Times after advancing from a year as a reporter and graduating magna cum laude from Ithaca College in two and a half years—she said she feels both excited and honored to continue filling gaps in local news coverage.  Ithaca.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tompkins Cortland Community College is filling a vacancy on its board of trustees and is seeking county residents with a strong interest in higher education for a volunteer role that starts July 1 and lasts seven years – interested candidates must submit an application by June 16 via in person, mail, email, or fax.  Ithaca Journal
  • Tompkins Cortland Community College invites Tompkins County residents to apply for a Board of Trustees position that will help shape local higher education, with the new trustee serving a 7-year term beginning July 1. Applicants must submit a form by June 16 plus interviews will begin in late June.  Ithaca.com
  • Nearly 400 longtime staff were honored at Cornell’s 69th Annual Service Recognition Event held June 2 in the Schurman Hall Atrium at the College of Veterinary Medicine—recognizing service milestones from 25 to 50 years, with leaders praising their dedication through many challenges.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Brooks School celebrated five public policy PhD graduates who overcame COVID disruptions and a major departmental transition while completing dissertations on key issues like education, labor, foster care, and elderly care. Each graduate—Giulia Olivero, Katherine Sadowski, Yongxin Shang, Jenna Shelton, and Meredith Welch—will soon begin academic careers at top institutions across the country.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, Cornell Atkinson awards have given $21.7 million for 223 projects across Cornell, including a study to improve factory cooling and flood defenses in Bangladesh. The funds also support research on deep geothermal systems, heat disaster training and nutrient recycling—all aimed at finding sustainable solutions for food, climate and clean energy.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell researchers improved a microbe by editing its genes—boosting acid production—to extract key minerals and pull carbon dioxide out of the air. The new study showed the microbe now extracts minerals 73% faster and captures carbon 58% more efficiently using a natural process.  Cornell Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Laura Goodman nearly finalized a new test that detects tick-borne diseases before symptoms appear until a U.S. DOD stop-work order halted her lab’s research and put grant-funded positions at risk. The test uses common hospital equipment and showed promise in field trials with ticks and wild animal samples.  Cornell Chronicle
