CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Ithaca man Ahmed Abed pled guilty on June 10 to second-degree murder for intentionally killing his wife, Alaa Hussein Jeena Abedi, last November—he now faces a prison term of at least 15 years to life with sentencing set for August 19. 607 News Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A History Center exhibit will open on Juneteenth at 4 p.m. in the Ithaca Commons and share artifacts unearthed by nearly 100 Cornell students and local school children from the historic St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, known for its role in the Underground Railroad, while speakers including Cornell Provost Kavita Bala and Rev. Terrance King will discuss its significance plus the exhibit will run until Dec. 31. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ Bruce Lewenstein, a Cornell professor, received the inaugural Award for the Advancement of Science Communication as a Professional Field (the PCST Award) at the PCST Conference in Aberdeen on May 29 and was recognized for his major contributions to research and professional development in the field. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials announced on June 2 that Camp Barton State Park, a new 90-acre site on Cayuga Lake at the former Boy Scout camp, will soon open for hiking and nature observation. Local leaders in Ulysses, Trumansburg and Covert received a $100,000 grant to plan improvements— including a new bridge at the north entrance— to enhance visitor safety and access. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ Watkins Glen State Park offers a rugged two-mile Gorge Trail with 19 waterfalls and hundreds of stone steps that charge a $10 fee and ban pets from this area—other parts of the park remain pet friendly. The main tunnel entrance and Sentry Bridge will close on July 7 for construction—alternative entry points will stay open until summer 2026. Ithaca Journal

- ➤ Cornell University has listed its historic president’s house at 511 Cayuga Heights Road for $2.5 million to lower upkeep costs.
