- ➤ Ithaca Police arrested Steven Swavely on Tuesday, June 17 for allegedly setting arson fires at the Asteri Apartment Building on May 31 and June 1—he resisted arrest and his dog attacked officers and civilians before being turned over to the SPCA. Ithaca.com

- ➤ Southside Community Center held its annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday — over 100 people enjoyed soulful foods, dance performances, music and booths run by local groups. Executive director Chavon Bunch said the event honored a 50-year tradition and brought the community together. The Ithaca Voice
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cornell University announced it will review programs and staff and begin layoffs to cut deep financial shortfalls caused by frozen federal funds and rising costs – the university said it would mostly downsize by attrition – as it seeks a lasting plan to overcome current economic pressures. The move follows an unprecedented spring semester and comes as the largest employer in Tompkins County faces severe funding challenges. Ithaca.com

- ➤ New FEMA flood maps went into effect June 18, making more Ithaca homes eligible for flood insurance and requiring homeowners with federally-backed mortgages to purchase coverage within 120 days. City officials mailed information to residents as many remain confused about their flood risk and local leaders plan mitigation projects funded by a FEMA grant — actions that may bring changes to future insurance costs. - ➤ Trumansburg native Jennie Sutcliffe was unanimously approved by the Tompkins County Legislature as the new Whole Health Commissioner on June 17, replacing retired Frank Kruppa. Her appointment will take effect on July 7 (pending final approval from the state health department), and she brings over a decade of public health experience to lead the county’s integrated services.
