EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Due to extreme heat, the Ithaca City School District canceled Tuesday's classes while other districts ended school early, and TCAT is running reduced bus routes — buses overheated and air conditioning failed. Regents exams, graduations and polling locations remain scheduled as planned. The Ithaca Voice
- ➤ Cornell ILR School’s Scheinman Institute and the American Arbitration Association launched the Cornell ILR National Conflict Resolution Service to offer labor-management training and mediation services nationwide. Javier Ramirez, who brings over 20 years experience in dispute resolution, has been named executive manager—an appointment expected to expand the institute’s national outreach. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ Snapshot NY — a new citizen science project led by Cornell and the state DEC — is asking local residents to set up trail cameras to record photos of wildlife, including black bear, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and fisher, to help guide future conservation and management efforts. - ➤ Fifth Ward Common Council candidates debated city spending, housing affordability and transit improvements at a forum held at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center earlier this month. Shvets, Zurenda and Fisher offered different ideas on zoning, rent stabilization and tax reallocations ahead of the primary election today. The Ithaca Voice
- ➤ Last week, labor lawyer Iris Packman and Common Council member Pierre Saint-Perez met at GIAC in Ithaca to discuss rising living costs, homelessness, environmental issues, and immigrant rights in a forum organized by the League of Women Voters—Packman called for expanding dense, affordable housing while Saint-Perez stressed improving transportation and community programs. Their discussion came ahead of today's primary election, giving voters clear insight into each candidate's local roots and plans. The Ithaca Voice
- ➤ Ithaca city officials said a working group formed in April 2024 to draft a just-cause law for job security stalled due to scheduling issues — its members have not met since early this year and its authorization expired at the end of 2024.
