- ➤ On June 22, a coalition including Ithaca DSA, Tompkins County Working Families Party and the Ithaca Tenants Union held a town hall to discuss raising the minimum wage as living costs have risen. Local council members and workers noted that nearly 48% of county workers earn less than the calculated living wage of $24.82 per hour — a figure that far exceeds the state minimum wage of $15.50. - ➤ Researchers from Cornell AgriTech and Rutgers found that laser weeders work as well as common herbicides in test plots of peas, beets and spinach—reducing weed coverage and boosting crop biomass. - ➤ ABC Supply will open a roofing store at the former Lansing Market site at 3125 N. Triphammer Rd. in August. The 14,000‑square‑foot property was bought by Lansing Market Realty LLC for $1.25 million and features a parking lot with space for 75 vehicles—ABC Supply will begin branding, staffing, and setup before opening within 30 to 60 days. - ➤ At a June 10 meeting, PRI trustees said they asked the town of Ulysses to take over stewardship of Smith Woods (a 32-acre forest in Trumansburg) that is used for public tours, research, and recreation. Town Supervisor Katelin Olsen said liaisons (Goldman and Weatherby) were named to help transfer ownership and keep the trails and deer exclosure properly maintained. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ A study published yesterday in Nature Geoscience finds that burying wood debris from managed forests can capture between 770 and 937 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2100 and may reduce global warming by up to 0.76°F. Researchers at Cornell AgriTech and on the Ithaca campus are testing the method on orchards to help reach carbon neutrality—an approach that could also lower wildfire risk. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ The City of Ithaca is seeking a new member for its Planning and Development Board — a group that guides site plan reviews, advises Common Council on planning, zoning and public improvements. The board meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday with seven voting members serving three-year terms and welcomes applicants interested in development, planning, design, architecture or landscape architecture. - ➤ The City of Ithaca reminded water customers to schedule a mandatory appointment for free water meter installations by East National Water, LLC (installers will be in uniform with proper ID) and warned that service may be disrupted if the appointment is not made within 7 days.
