COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tompkins County Office for the Aging has launched a Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program that gives seniors a coupon booklet — with five $5 coupons for fresh produce — to help ease food insecurity. Seniors 60 and older meeting income limits can pick up their booklets at 214 W. Martin Luther King Jr./State St. on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or at other community events.  14850

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New York State United Teachers said the Regents biology and earth science exams included topics not taught in class—causing confusion for teachers and parents. The Education Department said the tests follow state standards and full exam materials will be released soon.  My Twin Tiers

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On July 3, a damaging supercell storm swept through Ithaca and nearby towns—bringing 70 to 90 mile an hour winds that knocked down trees and wires and left about 1,500 residents without power. Meteorologist Adam Gill confirmed a tornado warning near Ithaca but said there was no evidence of a tornado touchdown.  Ithaca Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County was awarded $1 million through New York State’s County Infrastructure Grant Program to fund infrastructure at The Woods, the first phase of SouthWorks Ithaca on a long-vacant industrial site on South Aurora Street. The funding—matched by additional grants and private investment at no cost to taxpayers—will help jump-start development of 100 affordable housing units and prepare the area for future mixed-income living.  Tompkins County
  • Cornell researchers have built decision support tools and artificial intelligence methods to help the Navy and Marines deliver supplies like blood quickly in overseas conflicts or disasters. After a stop-work order in April, the Office of Naval Research temporarily funded the team to test their models during a military exercise in Okinawa+experts from several universities are also working to refine the project.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Daniel Nolan was sworn in on July 3 to represent Ithaca’s Belle Sherman and South Hill after Susan Currie resigned and will serve the remaining five-month term on the Tompkins County Legislature. Nolan said he is grateful for the chance to work for his neighbors and will not run after his term ends—labor lawyer Iris Packman is set to take over following the November general election.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Kraft Heinz recalled over 350,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Original after USDA announced on July 2 that 12-, 36- and 48-ounce packages sold from April 24 to June 11 may be contaminated with listeria; consumers should discard or return affected products + contact the company with questions.  607 News Now
