CRIME NEWS

  • Ithaca Police worked with Rhode Island law enforcement to recover a missing 9-year-old reported by Tompkins County Child Protective Services on July 7 after the child was taken from Ithaca following a court order of protection issued on July 3 — the child was located on July 8 and a safety plan is now being developed.  Ithaca.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Swimming at Taughannock Falls State Park remains closed because blue-green algae were found in the water. Cayuga Lake recorded its highest harmful algal bloom counts in 2024—officials are now working to centralize data and prevent future outbreaks.  607 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County received a $1M state grant to build essential roads, water lines and sewer systems at SouthWorks on South Hill—this funding will support the start of constructing 100 affordable apartments in a planned 915-unit mixed-income neighborhood. The work is set to begin on a long-vacant industrial site as part of the County Infrastructure Grant Program.  Ithaca Journal
  • New York State will mail one-time inflation refund checks to more than 8 million eligible residents starting in October to help ease rising costs. The checks, which will be sent automatically using 2023 IT—201 tax return data, will range from $150 to $400 based on income and filing status.  My Twin Tiers
  • Local officials will hold a free Q&A session Tuesday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at Ithaca Town Hall—215 North Tioga Street and online—to review new FEMA flood maps that went into effect last month and explain updated flood insurance requirements impacting over 1,000 city parcels; property owners and renters are encouraged to attend and ask questions.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Tompkins County’s Office for the Aging offers $25 coupon books through the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program for adults aged 60 and over, available at 214 West State Street until September 30. The coupons are valid at participating markets through November 30 — they can be picked up at COFA on a first-come, first-served basis from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  607 News Now

  • Guthrie Ithaca Gastroenterology joined the Guthrie network on July 1 by partnering with Gastroenterology Associates of Ithaca—its office on N. Triphammer Road stays open for appointments while endoscopic procedures now occur at the GI suite on Willow Ave and at Cortland Medical Center. Patients can now use eGuthrie for online scheduling, test results, and bill payments.  Tompkins Weekly
  • The Cornell Thought Summit held June 16-20 at Gates Hall brought experts together to explore how everyday AI and clinical systems can work together to improve mental health care. Qian Yang, an assistant professor of information science, said that linking tools like ChatGPT with doctors' systems shows promise — although she noted it is hard to build safe systems.  Cornell Chronicle
