- ➤ The Citizen Preparedness Corps will hold a free disaster training session on July 22 at 6 p.m. at the Museum of the Earth on Trumansburg Road in Ithaca, where residents will learn how to stay safe and get emergency kits—led by experts from the National Guard and local emergency services. - ➤ On Aug. 8—9, record-setting Cornellian Claire de Boer ’84 and distance swimmer Bridgette Hobart will relay a full-length swim across Cayuga Lake to raise funds for The Sophie Fund, which supports mental health programs for young people in Ithaca and Tompkins County. The swimmers will alternate every hour during the relay and rely on fair weather to complete the course while honoring loved ones lost to suicide. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ Ithaca Shakespeare Company will perform Shakespeare’s The Tempest outdoors at Robert H. Treman State Park from July 17 to 20 and July 23 to 27, 2025 with shows starting at 6 pm and tickets priced from $10 to $20 while guests are welcome to bring food and drink. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ The Buffalo Pothole Bandit visited Ithaca over the weekend and installed nine mosaic artworks in public spaces, including a large piece titled Homer in the Bushes at the corner of Columbia and Aurora Streets. The anonymous artist used cement, colorful tiles, and additives to turn potholes into art—continuing a practice that began in 2022. The Ithaca Voice

- ➤ A solar project in Lansing received a tax break from the Tompkins County Industrial Development Agency Wednesday — the 5MWac array spans 22.7 acres, is expected to generate enough energy for over 800 homes, and will save an estimated $1.6 million in local property taxes over 25 years. Genie Solar Energy said the break was needed to keep the project from operating at a loss amid uncertain state law changes and will create 50 temporary construction jobs during development. - ➤ The Ithaca City School District announced new leadership today, naming Kari Burke as director of Athletics and Wellness with Shane Taylor as her assistant and Caitlin Bram as director of Special Education. Several schools also have new leaders as Ithaca High School names Caren Arnold principal with Julie McChesney and Terrance King as associate principals, Lehman Alternative appoints Keith Harrington as principal, Boynton Middle School names Bart Auble as associate principal, and elementary schools name Stephen Anderson, Tara Caiza, Samantha Little, and Jessa Salibrici to lead their campuses. 607 News Now

- ➤ On July 9, the Community Science Institute reported that harmful algal blooms were seen stretching along Cayuga Lake’s western shore near Taughannock Falls State Park, where a bloom was observed in the morning. Reports starting during the July 4 holiday weekend have led officials to track the blooms for safety — tests are pending to confirm if they are toxic. Ithaca.com
