COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties dedicated a restored historic home at 417 South Aurora Street after three years of work by volunteers, donors and new homeowner Carrie Sawyer and her family. New York State named the home as a historic site—its first historic restoration project in Ithaca—which preserved original features to provide safer, affordable housing.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Ithaca Police are searching for 55-year-old Jennifer Barker — who has not been seen in three weeks and was reported missing on Thursday — as they investigate her disappearance.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Cornell study found that Amazon’s AI shopping assistant Rufus often gives vague or wrong responses when users write in dialects like African American English—especially when prompts include typos. The researchers recommend that developers use dialect-aware audits to ensure all users get equal quality service in important areas such as education.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Two Cornell doctoral students—Pascal Caraccioli Salinas in geological sciences and Joshua Luoma in applied physics—were awarded fellowships by the U.S. Department of Energy yesterday. Salinas received the DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship while Luoma was named for the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration Laboratory Residency Graduate Fellowship.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell faculty Mao Ye and Xi Yang launched the Cornelia Ye and Christine Ye Awards to honor graduate teaching assistants for their teaching work. The awards now offer increased funds to recognize both international and domestic TAs—acknowledging their vital role in supporting Cornell classrooms.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Researchers at Cornell and IBM showed two breakthroughs in quantum computing that help make computers that can fix their own errors—one using error-resistant quantum gates and the other using special particles to solve tough problems. Their work used a scalable method so future quantum computers can tackle tasks normal computers cannot handle.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ithaca Police Department has been increasing its patrols on the Commons since June—targeting violations of city rules that ban bike riding, smoking, vaping, and possessing open containers, as Chief Tom Kelly explained on July 11. Officers in uniform continue to enforce these ordinances across downtown.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell researchers found that in harsh conditions gentle microbes do better than aggressive ones who waste energy on toxins—using daily yeast tests and computer models to study the effects. Their work may help design better probiotics to fight infections.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cayuga Health’s Dr. Eli Finkelsztein warned that warmer weather raises the risk of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and anaplasmosis from black-legged ticks in upstate New York. He advised checking for ticks after outdoor activities and removing any found with tweezers — early treatment can help prevent illness if symptoms occur.  607 News Now
