- ➤ SouthWorks is hosting its second annual open house at the 95-acre site on South Aurora Street in Ithaca on Aug. 12 from 3 to 7 p.m. Community members can join hourly tours to see the adapted historic buildings and upcoming mixed-use projects (closed-toed shoes are required for tours). - ➤ AVS US launched two spacecraft into orbit on June 23 with help from Cornell’s research facilities— the spacecraft are now undergoing tests and will try an autonomous docking this fall. Tompkins Weekly

- ➤ Today, the 33rd Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival begins at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds with over 80 music groups scheduled to perform and local band Donna the Buffalo hosting a four-day event. The celebration features headliners like Vieux Farka Touré and Lukas Nelson — and the GrassRoots Happiness Parade starts Sunday at 2 p.m. The Ithaca Voice
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study published July 2 showed that toxic algae from Cornell research releases chemicals that mimic vitamin B1 to stop other algae from growing—raising concerns about harmful blooms in local lakes and risks for pets drinking contaminated water. Researchers say the behavior may lead to more frequent blooms even in clean waters. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ Village trustees in Cayuga Heights will update residents on the RaNic Golf Club and the property maintenance law — which bans boats and vehicles from front yards — during their meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Marcham Hall. They will also review reports from Fire Chief George Tamborelle and Police Chief Jerry Wright. 607 News Now
- ➤ Tompkins County legislators appointed Brittanie Earle as Commissioner of Social Services effective July21 — she brings over 15 years of public service experience in crisis intervention, youth programs, and emergency response, including her recent role at Cornell’s Community Response Team. The county expects her innovative leadership and strong community partnerships to bolster services for local families. Tompkins County
- ➤ The Ithaca Police Department announced increased enforcement of Downtown Commons ordinances this July to keep the area safe and welcoming. City officials and local outreach programs are working with business owners + urging residents to follow the rules for a secure public space. City of Ithaca
- ➤ Danby Town Hall, built in the 1840s, will see its three natural gas heaters replaced with air-source heat pumps using a $60,000 grant—nearly $50,000 of which is set for new equipment. The project will finish before the end of the year and aims to remove the building's fossil fuel use. Tompkins Weekly
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cornell researchers found that the H5N1 virus made dairy cows sick in an Ohio herd of 3,876 cows, causing mastitis and lowering milk production. Nearly 20% of the cows suffered extra costs of about $950 per affected cow (covering lost milk and early removal) (with conventional milking practices possibly aiding virus spread). Cornell Chronicle
