EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Assistant professor Alex Conway won the SIAM Early Career Prize for his work in designing and analyzing algorithms for data storage systems. He works at Cornell Tech and Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science—his research makes computer memory and storage systems faster. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Today, Cornell doctoral candidate Jadon Geathers introduced ChitterChatter—an AI tool that lets students practice real conversations and receive feedback on grammar and pronunciation. The tool will be presented on July 22 at the ACM Learning @ Scale conference and is being refined with input from language instructors and students. Cornell Chronicle
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Flash floods on Sunday night damaged streets and homes in Newark Valley while a few residents were evacuated and around 25 homes were affected. Local officials noted that a church in Owego is sheltering up to 50 displaced people (two streets will be rebuilt) and (no injuries were reported). WSKG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A resolution to improve health services in the Lansing school district was defeated 4—3 at a June 9 meeting as board president Aziza Benson said state law limits what school medical directors can do. Benson explained on Ithaca’s Morning News that the decision leaves the issue unresolved. 607 News Now
- ➤ Brittanie Earle was appointed Commissioner of Tompkins County Social Services by the county legislature and will officially begin on July 21. She brings over 15 years of public service experience including her role as interim director at Cornell University—her background in youth services and crisis response is expected to guide county programs. - ➤ On Thursday around 5 a.m. one lane of Route 89 near Hangar Theatre reopened after downed power lines closed the road, with flaggers guiding vehicles through. Drivers should expect delays along Taughannock Boulevard — near Treman Marina on the west side of Cayuga Lake between Ithaca and Ulysses. 14850
- ➤ Ithaca is hosting a public meeting to review project ideas for a downtown revitalization effort that could bring $10 million in state funds. The meeting will be held on July 29th from 5pm—7pm at the Tompkins County Public Library, where residents can share input via discussion and a public survey. City of Ithaca
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cornell researchers got a $1 million grant from the Ono Pharma Breakthrough Science Initiative to study how changes to proteins help cells stay alive and fight diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer. They will use chemical biology methods — like bioorthogonal chemistry — over the next three years to learn more about the cell cleanup process. Cornell Chronicle
