ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two people were taken to Robert Packer Hospital after a two-car crash on Saturday morning in Newfield when a 2020 Honda CR-V failed to yield to a 2009 Ford Escape on Elmira Road at 10:35 a.m., and police are still investigating the accident.  The Ithaca Voice

CRIME NEWS

  • Ithaca man Autreyu L. Massaline was charged with second-degree murder for fatally stabbing Edward J. Warren on July 24 in the 200 block of Elmira Road—he was arrested on July 26 by Ithaca Police and New York State Police Major Crimes Unit and remains in Tompkins County Jail without bail.  Ithaca Journal

  • Ithaca’s 17th annual Porchfest will take place on Sunday, September 21 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Organizers have opened applications for performers, vendors, and volunteers—performer and volunteer signups close August 31 while vendor applications must be in by August 20.  14850

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Last Friday, the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency voted to defer the Farmers Market’s rent until December — the decision helps the market manage a cash flow crunch from slow state grant payments and rising interest on construction loans — and leaders plan to boost fundraising to cover bills.  The Ithaca Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell food science students won top awards at the IFT FIRST national competition in Chicago from July 13 to 16, earning honors for innovative products like a sushi-inspired snack and an egg-based cereal. Their strong performance in challenges such as Smart Snacks for Kids and the College Bowl Competition continued a 17-year winning legacy and highlighted their teamwork and creativity.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell’s Kessler Scholars Program received a $1.1M four-year grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Judy and Fred Wilpon Family Foundation to support first generation low-income college students until 2030.   • A study showed that a stream’s ecosystem returned near its natural state three years after a small dam was removed and fish like juvenile American eels moved into the improved habitat — researchers say dam removal can be a cost-effective way to boost water quality and restore natural flow.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County faces an $11 million deficit as revenues fall and costs rise — officials said that higher demand for social services and reduced state funding have driven the gap. The county will start its 2026 budget process by reviewing spending and considering cuts — while it aims to keep the tax levy low and maintain essential programs.  Ithaca.com
  • Tompkins County Administrator Korsah Akumfi began compiling the 2026 budget after a recent retreat, with early estimates showing an $11 million deficit caused by rising service costs and declining revenues—these factors highlight the fiscal challenges ahead. A preliminary budget will be presented in September and is expected to be adopted by November.  Tompkins County
  • Nick Ensign is serving as interim director of the Tompkins County Highway Department after Jeff Smith retired—county officials plan to hire a permanent director within the next two months.  607 News Now
