COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug 1, over 80 pro-Palestine protestors gathered at Bernie Milton Pavilion carrying pots and pans to honor Palestinian children lost to starvation in Gaza—police closed East Seneca Street to keep traffic clear as speakers urged local leaders to address the blockade, and protesters marched down nearby streets before returning to the pavilion.  Ithaca.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cinemapolis in Ithaca is presenting a month-long series of food-themed films starting this week, with staff picks that include Spirited Away, Big Night, a culinary double feature on August 20 featuring Les Blank documentaries, and Tampopo to close the month.  14850

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell named Kyle Kimball as its new vice president for university relations — his appointment was approved by the Board on Aug 1 and will begin on Sept 15. In his role he will lead internal and external communications and work with government agencies while he looks forward to joining the Ithaca community.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell will offer a non-degree study program for adults this fall — the courses range from engineering to the arts, run from Aug. 25 to Dec. 20, and require sign-up by Aug. 20.  607 News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York State Parks announced that a $1.4M project will upgrade a section of the Black Diamond Trail in Trumansburg by adding a new 70-vehicle parking lot, public restrooms and rehabilitating a historic trestle. The improvements will boost safety and access for hikers, cyclists and cross-country skiers traveling from Ithaca to Taughannock Falls — a move that supports the state’s commitment to enhancing outdoor recreation.  Tompkins Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ithaca city officials concluded meetings on Aug. 4+ they reviewed nearly 100 miles of sidewalks to pinpoint where improvements are needed. Mayor Robert Cantelmo said public hearings will be scheduled soon+ the city will draft a sidewalk improvement plan for 2026.  607 News Now
  • Tompkins County announced on August 05 that the Board of Elections will stay in Ithaca after community members expressed concern over relocating it outside city limits as part of the Center of Government project — county officials said they are exploring alternative Ithaca sites to maintain uninterrupted services.  Tompkins County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell food scientists developed a natural blue dye from algae protein that they improved into more uniform, stable pieces and may soon replace petroleum-based colorants in foods due to health concerns, with their work published on July 24th in Food Hydrocolloids. The researchers will partner with the food industry to scale up production while the U.S. Department of Agriculture funded the study.  Cornell Chronicle
