ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews investigated a porch fire on Cox Lane in Newfield on Aug 9—flames were put out using an extinguisher and no one was injured.  607 News Now

  • Downtown Ithaca Alliance and MJB Consulting are boosting retail in downtown by matching vacant storefronts with new tenants—Phase 2 will start in September or October with a marketing push and a tenant database to help revitalize the area.  Tompkins Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TC3 signed an agreement with Cornell on Aug. 7 that will let its graduates transfer to CALS if they earn an AAS degree with a 3.0 GPA and B or better in all transfer courses—this new pathway offers a clear chance for an Ivy League agriculture bachelor’s degree.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Noble Snyder, a student at Groton Jr./Sr. High School, will study in Codogno, Italy as a Rotary exchange student for his junior year—he turns 16 on August 20 and leaves six days later—and his family along with school officials worked to clear all the red tape for his journey.  Tompkins Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca opened a new cardiac catheterization lab today to help treat heart patients—joining Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, which also upgraded its lab with safer, clearer imaging. Doctors say these labs will soon provide faster and more accurate care for heart issues.  The Ithaca Voice
  • For 10 years, Cornell Health’s Skorton Center—created to boost campus health—has developed innovative programs and policies to improve student wellness. After hiring new director Jennifer Austin in December 2024, the center expanded its initiatives to benefit the community.  Cornell Chronicle

  • Red’s Place, a Downtown Ithaca gastropub known for its creative burgers and shareable plates, reopened a year ago under new owner Nick Acquilano—recognized from his time at Plantation Bar & Grill. The restaurant continues to offer its popular menu of sandwiches, salads, and daily specials at 107 North Aurora Street.  14850

  • Ithaca’s Jocelin Wright has been named the new assistant coach for Colgate women’s basketball for the 2025 season—she leaves four years at Tompkins Cortland Community College to focus on recruiting and defense as the Raiders aim to win the Patriot League and reach the NCAA Tournament.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Bill Bryant was inducted into the NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame on July 30 to honor nearly 50 years in high school athletics, including his service at Ithaca High School. He will step down on January 1 and work with his successor through the end of the school year.  Tompkins Weekly
