  • Ithaca Times has launched its annual Best of Ithaca poll to let readers vote for the best in Entertainment, Essentials, Food and Drink, People, Places and Open-ended categories. Polls will close at noon on September 24 and the Best of Ithaca issue will hit newsstands on Oct. 1.  Ithaca.com
  • Monks on the Commons held its monthly Monks Gives Back fundraiser on August 13 at the Ithaca Marriott Downtown on the Commons and donated 50% of proceeds to Ithaca Montessori School with IMS parent TJ Jenkins serving as guest bartender. This event is part of a series that has raised more than $25,000 for local causes—supporting education and community programs.  14850

  • An apartment fire on the fourth floor of a building at 118 East Green Street in Ithaca started Monday night when lithium-ion batteries spread the blaze—firefighters kept working into early Tuesday morning without any reported injuries.  607 News Now

  • Mike Berne of MJB Consulting and the Downtown Ithaca Alliance presented preliminary findings of a two-year retail study showing that Ithaca’s retail market is stagnating with a 12.5% drop in Commons foot traffic. The study—funded by Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funding—warns that business districts from downtown to Collegetown will need coordinated public and private efforts before a crisis develops.  Ithaca.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Cornell research group has developed Pocket Time-Lapse software that lets phone users capture subtle changes over time into panoramic videos; the technique aligns thousands of images taken in varied conditions and is being showcased at SIGGRAPH from Aug. 10 until today in Vancouver. The tool may benefit field science, construction, and health monitoring—providing a fresh view of everyday scenes in Ithaca.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 5th, Cornell researchers published a study online that tested alternatives to neonics on large-seeded vegetable crops such as snap bean, dry bean and sweet corn. Field trials from 2021 to 2024 in five states showed that while some alternatives like cyantraniliprole and spinosad performed as well as thiamethoxam on sweet corn, they did not consistently control seedcorn maggot on dry beans and snap beans—findings that will inform future registration efforts.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell chemistry researchers designed a light-powered—reusable catalyst that is pre-charged by electricity and drives challenging reactions to help build safer drugs and clean up toxins. The study showed that flexible polymers work better and the catalyst can be recovered and reused several times.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Robert Cantelmo announced today that a commission will review the City Charter and recommend updates to clarify roles—such as those of the Mayor, Council and City Manager—and improve government accountability. The commission, made up of residents, civic leaders, legal experts and policy practitioners, will hold public hearings and submit its recommendations to the Council in 2026.  City of Ithaca

  • Wegmans recalled several cheese products on August 12 due to possible Listeria contamination—customers in Ithaca can return Buttery Camembert, Assorted Cheese Flights, Grilling Camembert with Tapenade and Roasted Tomatoes, and Caramel Apple Pecan Topped Brie for a refund.  607 News Now
