  • Jonathan Lowenhar ’96 spoke on the Startup Cornell podcast and explained the most common mistakes CEOs make while sharing advice from his work at Enjoy The Work—he drew on his experience leading startups and a major business segment to help founders grow strong companies.  Cornell Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Ahmed A. Abed, a 44-year-old Ithaca man, pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced by Judge Scott A. Miller to 25 years to life for causing the early November death of his wife in a southside apartment—three of the four children spoke at the hearing.  14850

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell Cinema announced its fall film season that will bring more than a dozen film series featuring horror, comedy, musicals and restoration projects. The season will open on August 28 with a 4K restoration of Paris, Texas as part of the Robby Müller: Light Work series — offering local audiences a chance to see classic films in a fresh way.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell University leaders said spending cuts and a hiring freeze will carry over into the new academic year—layoffs may affect some of its 11,000-plus employees—because of tight budgets. They noted that these measures come as the school works to balance costs amid ongoing federal pressures.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Cornell Law School launched a new student exchange program with National Taiwan University College of Law — expanding its long-standing partnership with Waseda University — as faculty met in Tokyo on July 30—31 and in Taipei on August 4 to discuss research and strengthen academic ties.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Danby welcomed a new youth program educator as Jorin Clougherty plans to launch a puppet and mask creation course this fall until Halloween—he draws on his theatre background and past as a program participant to inspire local youth.  607 News Now

  • Residents can fill out a survey open until Friday, August 29 to share their opinions on design options for the Center of Government—answers on building features, outdoor spaces, and sustainability goals will help shape the final design.  Tompkins County

  • New data from Zumper shows that Ithaca apartments were listed at a median rent of $2,237 in July—down slightly from last year’s $2,265 but 12% higher than last month’s $1,990 average.  Ithaca Journal
