- ➤ The YMCA of Ithaca and Tompkins County is collecting scrap metal through September 2 to raise funds for childcare and school year programs. Donations are accepted at Teets and Sons dumpster near the outdoor pavilion adjacent to the YMCA — behind Ciao on North Triphammer Road in Lansing, and while the facility is closed for upkeep, members can use alternate local sites. 607 News Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Ithaca police arrested Nazir Chisolm—20—from the city for attempted murder after a stabbing on June 12 at West Green Street that injured a person, with officers taking him from Tennessee on Aug 22 and now holding him at Tompkins County Jail. My Twin Tiers
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cornell’s ILR master’s students learned in July they would not receive the usual assistantships for the fall and instead were offered lower-paying GTRS roles without union protections—one student later was reassigned while others still face higher tuition costs. Union officials and affected students say the change is a move to weaken union power by shifting costs onto students. Ithaca.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tompkins County lawmakers approved a resolution on August 19 to temporarily move the Assessment Department and the Office for the Aging to 31 Dutchmill Road in Lansing while the Center of Government is built—plans to relocate the Board of Elections were dropped after public feedback. The Assessment Department will have reduced in-person hours on Tuesday from 2 to 4 while remaining available by phone and email Monday through Friday. 607 News Now
