- ➤ Ithaca police arrested 20-year-old Nazir Chisolm in Maryville on Friday for a June 12 stabbing on West Green Street—he is charged with attempted murder and is held in Tompkins County Jail pending further proceedings. The Ithaca Voice
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The History Center will launch a treasure hunt on Sept. 6 that challenges teams to solve local history puzzles to find $10,000 in jewels donated by Micky Roof. The event will help cover a budget gap and charge a $100 fee per team while only two people know the jewels' exact location — teams must complete all puzzles to claim the prize. The Ithaca Voice
- ➤ Observatories and dark sky parks in the Southern Tier offer public stargazing in Upstate New York with events running this fall. Kopernik Observatory in Vestal and Fuertes Observatory in Ithaca will let visitors view Saturn’s shadow transits every 16 days from Aug 16 until Oct 6—check weather and event times for details. - ➤ Cornell scientists studied plant cell walls in Arabidopsis to learn how to grow biodegradable materials that could be used in future products. The study, published Aug. 14 in Nature Communications, showed that the connections in cell walls play a key role—researchers hope this work will lead to sustainable plant-based innovations. - ➤ Sam Tanenhaus has been named the Zubrow Distinguished Visiting Journalist at Cornell for fall. He will hold a master class on op-ed writing and meet with students and faculty — sharing his experience as a New York Times editor — to offer insights into modern history and narrative writing. - ➤ Cornell announced budget cuts across its Ithaca campus and others due to high legal costs, rising wages, and less government funding. - ➤ Cornell Tech researchers developed a login system called CSAL — a privacy-first tool that detects hacks without sharing device details. - ➤ City staff and the Sustainability and Climate Justice Commission are inviting local residents to share input on Ithaca’s Green New Deal Climate Action Plan—feedback will be gathered through public surveys and a drop-in session.
