CRIME NEWS

  • Ithaca resident Zachary Jackson, a 38-year-old convicted felon who pleaded guilty on August 26 to drug and gun charges for selling cocaine and carrying a Glock, will face at least ten years in prison this December—justice officials said the sentence follows a coordinated investigation by local agencies and the DEA.  607 News Now
  • At about 7:20 p.m. on August 26, 2025, officers from the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office—Ithaca Police and New York State Police saw a suspected drug sale at the 200 block of Conifer Circle, stopping Heath Phillips from Freeville and William Ellison from Ithaca, who now face charges and are held without bail.  Tompkins County
  • On August 26, officers on the G.I.V.E. detail saw a drug deal on Conifer Circle at 7:20 p.m.—they arrested Heath Phillips for selling drugs and William Ellison for drug possession after recovering cocaine, meth, and cash, and both remain in jail without bail.  607 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tompkins County is enjoying a busy fall with vibrant foliage, returning students, and the upcoming Apple Harvest Festival in downtown Ithaca from Sept. 26 to 28. Officials noted that the Visitor Experience team won a state award—while they expect tourism to drop 2.5% in 2026 due to less international and academic travel.  Tompkins Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Laura Chinchilla Miranda—former president of Costa Rica—and Mick Mulvaney, a former U.S. Congressman, have been named the 2025-26 Brooks School Nixon Fellows at Cornell's public policy school in Ithaca. They will visit campus this year to speak with students, meet with teachers, and share ideas about public policy.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell University hosted the 2025 SUPREME review at the new Ithaca Downtown Conference Center — from July 29–31 to show advances in semiconductor technology and workforce training, with over 150 researchers, students and industry leaders giving talks, tours and awards. The event proved Cornell’s role in driving semiconductor research and preparing the future workforce.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new study at the Cornell Experimental Ponds Facility found that ponds with both submerged — floating plants had higher levels of methane and carbon dioxide in the water, which could affect overall greenhouse gas releases. The findings may lead to new management strategies aimed at reducing emissions from aquatic systems.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the city contractor begins milling and paving on Dryden Rd where the 100 block from Eddy St to College Ave and blocks 300 through 500 from Bryan Ave to Ithaca Rd will be closed to all but emergency responders—drivers must follow detour routes via Ithaca Rd, Mitchell St, Eddy St, Catherine St, or Campus Rd. The work is set to finish on Friday, September 4.  City of Ithaca

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell researchers in Ithaca built a 3D eye-on-a-chip to mimic eye fluid flow and study how the steroid dexamethasone triggers glaucoma; the study published Aug 27 found that ALK5 in trabecular meshwork cells lowers VEGFC, tightening drainage junctions—raising eye pressure that can lead to vision loss. The team plans to test other genetic targets to advance treatment options.  Cornell Chronicle
