  • Downtown Ithaca will host its 43rd Annual Apple Harvest Festival from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28 where more than 150 vendors and 25 farmers will offer heirloom apples, fresh-pressed cider, baked treats and handcrafted goods. Families will enjoy live music, a Welcome Students Showcase from 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 27 and free bike valet and parking services to support eco-friendly travel.  Ithaca Journal
  • On Aug 28, about 10 protestors gathered outside the Peggy Ryan Williams Center to oppose the cancelled Policy Breakfast with government officials.   • Ithaca hospice worker Kira Lallas will present her moving solo show Koans at the End of Life: A Hospice Worker’s Story at Argos Warehouse on September 28 at 4:00 p.m. and October 5 at 7:00 p.m. — drawing on her 15 years in hospice care, the performance explores healing, mortality and personal reflection.  Tompkins Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Dr. Luvelle Brown explained on Aug. 28 that a state law will ban smart devices in all Ithaca City School District classrooms on the first day of school. She added that middle and high schools will follow different rules while parents are advised to call the front office in emergencies — ensuring contact in urgent situations.  607 News Now
  • Community Foundation of Tompkins County and GIAC launched their largest back to school drive using a $16,000 gift from the Lane Family Fund to help local students get new backpacks and supplies between $30 and $80. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Lea Webb announced that Ithaca will receive $50,000 for a study on infiltration and inflow improvements and Cortland will get $48,000 for wastewater treatment plant infrastructure+ over $700,000 in state funds will support clean water projects in the Southern Tier, allowing local areas to plan affordable water and sewer upgrades.  607 News Now

  • Dr. Martin Stallone announced on Wednesday that he will leave Centralus Health as CEO on Nov. 7 and start a new role as executive vice president with Lifetime Healthcare Companies on Dec. 1—Rob Lawlis has been named as his permanent replacement.  The Ithaca Voice
