  • RYOBI is recalling 764,000 electric pressure washers due to capacitors that can overheat and burst—there have been 41 explosions with 32 injuries from units sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlets between July 2017 and June 2024.  607 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • An elderly man missing from Cortland County was found safe in Lansing Monday morning when police used a Flock camera at a Mirabito gas station on Peruville Road to match his license plate with a missing person report and returned him to his Cortland residence—Sheriff Derek Osborne said this case shows the benefit of the technology.  The Ithaca Voice

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ithaca Waldorf School is launching a farm-to-table lunch program led by chef Melissa Hoffman who draws on local produce from nearby farmers and the school’s own garden — plant-forward meals will be served daily starting Monday, Sept. 8 with dairy and meat options on the side.  607 News Now
  • Ithaca College opened the new Academic Support Center this semester to bring together academic, advising and tutoring services that were spread across several offices (increasing students' access to help).  The Ithacan
  • Hundreds of school kids lined up Sunday evening at Staples on South Meadow Street in Ithaca to receive free backpacks and supplies from the Community Foundation of Tompkins County—volunteers handed out thousands of dollars’ worth of items with extras like pizza, balloon animals and face painting to help ease the end of summer break.  The Ithaca Voice

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Peace activists from Ithaca and Binghamton protested outside Rep. Josh Riley’s office in Binghamton on Aug. 20 after he took an AIPAC-sponsored trip to Israel amid a worsening crisis in Gaza. Protesters said he repeatedly canceled meetings with local peace groups—fueling strong opposition among his constituents.  Ithaca.com
  • Tompkins County is negotiating a three-year lease for the former Burger King building on Elmira Road to serve as a Code Blue shelter and navigation hub for emergency support when temperatures drop below 32 degrees — a project born from close collaboration with city partners to address homelessness while lease details and shared costs are still being finalized.  Ithaca.com

  • The Ithaca College volleyball team has high hopes for the postseason after winning three consecutive Liberty League titles and finishing No. 20 in women’s Division III, bolstered by experienced players and a new assistant coach.
